8/10 -- VERY TOUCHING EPISODE.
Analog_Devotee9 May 2021
A really heartfelt episode centered around developing Brian's character. Too many people have mistaken McFarlane for JUST a comedy writer; this man can pull heartstrings like the best of them.

Episodes like this that made Family Guy great

One of those unexpectedly touching cartoon episodes that puts a smile on your face not from laughter but from the message at the end. The episodes where Seth makes Brian's issues human are some of the best and the ones that stand out. The first one being the season finale of season 1. Episodes that don't base the entire episode on Peter being borderline mentally ill or Stewie being queer are some of the best in the series.

The jokes on this one aren't as cleaver and witty, however the plot of this episode is the main driving factor. This episode is about Development and exploration of the relationship between Brian and Lois. A problem that many of us have faced in life, being in love with your best friends girl. What do you do? Do you tell her and ruin the friendship? Risk your best friends friendship? I won't spoil what happens, but the message at the end gives you a great feeling of optimism and makes you do the same thing with you own life. There are jokes that stand out though. The opening scene features Stewie invading mr. Rogers world and there is another joke about the George Jetson getting trapped on a treadmill.

Warning: Spoilers
The most subtle difference between Family Guy and something like South Park is that the characters are believable and the way they relate to each other is credible. In this episode, Brian is having a midlife crisis - he's seven years old in human terms (in case you didn't know, the maximum life expectancy of a dog is fourteen) and can't stop himself from peeing on the carpet. He blames it on Stewie at first, but when he's caught in the act he decides to see a psychiatrist. The unsettling truth comes out - he's in love with Lois, his owner's wife. This is the cue for a number of surprisingly sensitive (but also funny) scenes in which Brian gets hot under the dog collar watching Lois and Peter chasing each other with a hosepipe, Brian barely containing his emotions whilst he and Lois watch the news together, and Stewie flirting quite outrageously with his mother just to annoy the lovesick pooch! It's a testament to how well-made and thoughtful this series is that I actually felt myself not only identifying with Brian but also falling in love a little with Lois - well, who wouldn't sell their soul for such a sympathetic character who'd fight to the death for her husband and kids, and who cooks a mean 'noodle caboodle' with M&Ms substituting for paprika?! This episode revealed a new dimension to Family Guy, and helped me enjoy the series in a completely different light. No doubt the no-brainers whose idea of sophisticated humour is Cartman kicking somebody in the nuts would find themselves getting antsy during this show, but as Stewie would no doubt say, damn them to pus-filled blood-gutted hell!

Best episode so far

Warning: Spoilers
I love this episode. So Brian is peeing everywhere so he goes to a therapist and finds out he loves Lois and I got to say, it's handled very well. Lois catches on very quickly and sits Brian down and tells him to "cherish the friendship they have" instead of trying to impress her also this is funniest episode so far.
