- Carl Winslow: You left the car by the side of the road?
- Harriette Winslow: No, it left *me* by the side of the road.
- Carl Winslow: Come on, Edward, let's go get the car.
- [heads to the door]
- Carl Winslow: Don't worry, Harriette, things aren't that bad.
- Harriette Winslow: Did I mention the car was on fire?
- [Carl runs out]
- Carl Winslow: Son, your mother got fired.
- Eddie Winslow: From her job?
- Carl Winslow: No, out of a cannon.
- Harriette Winslow: Mr. Seeger, I really believe I can do that security job.
- Mr. Seeger: Harriette, I'm trying to be nice, but the fact is this job requires management experience, you'd have people working under you. You'd have to be a leader, an organizer, a mediator, and quite frankly this job is way out of your league.
- Harriette Winslow: Oh really, Mr. Seeger? For your information I have management experience coming out of my ears.
- Mr. Seeger: It's not on your resume.
- Harriette Winslow: Oh yes it is, right there, it says *Mrs.* Harriette Winslow. I worked here full time and I was a full time mama. You want to talk management? I managed a home, a household budget, and a family. And Mr. Seeger, I'm talking about a job you can't call in sick for, you never get a raise or overtime, and you can't take vacations. Every day I'm a leader, an organizer, and a mediator, those are my qualifications. You want references? Call Eddie, Laura, and Judy Winslow, and ask them about my work. You know the number.
- [walks out]
- Judy Winslow: [stuffing envelopes for a job] Fold.
- Laura Winslow: Stuff.
- Rachel Crawford: Seal.
- Judy Winslow: Fold.
- Laura Winslow: Stuff.
- Rachel Crawford: Seal.
- Laura Winslow: [dryly] So *this* is the job that's going to save the family.
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: How did the job interview go?
- Carl Winslow: Well mama, we're not sure, either she got the job or she didn't.
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: Those usually *are* the choices.
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: I want you to know this entire dinner only cost four dollars and sixty cents.
- Carl Winslow: If there's one thing Mama knows, it's how to feed a large family on a small budget.
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: Well, I lived through the Depression.
- Judy Winslow: What's a Depression?
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: Oh it was a long time ago, sugar, the banks had failed, people lost their jobs and had to survive on practically nothing.
- [spoons slop onto a plate]
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: Pass this to your father.
- Eddie Winslow: [looks at it in disgust] What's that?
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: Mashed turnips and bacon.
- Eddie Winslow: I don't see no bacon!
- Estelle 'Mother' Winslow: I only used the drippings. I can get another meal off that meat. That's why it's called a Depression!
- Carl Winslow: [looks at his food] Well, I'm certainly depressed.
