Introducing the Hatrocks
gregorycanfield15 June 2022
This has never been one of my favorite episodes. The Hatrocks had never been seen before this episode, yet the first 15 minutes of the episode is all about the Hatrocks. These hillbillies were unappealing characters, and the reasons for their feud with the Flintstones are neither convincing nor engaging. There are a few funny scenes, however. I agree with Fred and his ancestor. Whoever painted that picture of Mona Hatrock should have gotten life!

As the last of the Flintstones, you'll probably get a 21-gun salute!

Warning: Spoilers
I hope everyone has had a nice Summer and got to go someplace nice. This review is dedicated to Trevor Thompson, aka the Looney Tunes Critic. This review is for the episode Bedrock Hillbillies, from Season 4 of The Flintstones. Based on the legend of the Hatfields and the McCoys and Beverly Hillbillies, it's a favorite of mine. Herbert Finn (writer for The Honeymooners) wrote it. Doug Young plays the Minister, Benjy Hatrock and an Airmail Bird. Howard Morris plays Percy, Jethro and Slab Hatrock, a possum, a dinosaur and a gas attendant. Bea Benederet plays Gravella Hatrock. Mel Blanc plays Zack Hatrock and a pigasaurus. John Stephenson plays Mr. Slate, Shystone and a fish. June Foray plays Granny Hatrock, Ms. Shelley, an old woman, a dinosaur and a monkey. Hoyt Curtin unearths an amazing country and western-style musical score, which was used liberally in the Punkin Puss and Mushmouse and Ricochet Rabbit segments of the Magilla Gorilla. Plot synopsis: Our story begins in San Cemente, Arkanstone at the funeral of Zeke Flintstone. While there are mourners, nobody is sadder than Zeke's arch nemeses, the Hatrocks. They now have nobody to feud with. However, they get word the heir of Zeke's estate is Fred Flintstone, so they eagerly await his arrival (with shotguns, of course). Wilma picks up the mail with the news of Fred's inheritance and calls Fred at work. Fred is so ecstatic he dances with a chagrin-ridden Mr. Slate. Feed invites the Rubbles and both Barney and Fred bring shotguns for hunting. With the car packed, the Flintstones and the Rubbles (with Pebbles and Dino in tow) head for Arkanstone. They stop by a gas station and an attendant suggests Fred go back home "while you're still in one piece, one big fat piece!" Unbeknownst to Fred, the attendant is a cousin of the Hatrocks and tells them of the Flintstones' arrival. Betty suggests jokingly Fred will be greeted with a 21-gun salute (and eats her words immediately!). Fred's group runs to a house for shelter. Barney explains to the Hatrocks he is only a friend of the Flintstones. Jethro replies "Any friend of the Flintstones is an enemy to the Hatrocks- FIRE!" Wilma and Betty come across Zeke Flintstones' picture and breaks the news that the rundown shelter is really Fred's inheritance. Meanwhile, Granny and Gravella Hatrock come by with a possum pie as a peace offering. When asked about the feud, Granny shares 100 years prior, Mona Hatrock had her portrait painted. Rory Flintstone snidely joked "I don't know what the artist hot for that painting. But if you ask me, he should've got life!" Then Granny excuses herself and whacks Fred in the stomach! "One side, Fatso!" The feud resumes temporarily until Wilma discovers Pebbles is missing. At the same time, Gravella also is missing Slab. The 2 babies have run off together and ride on a log near a waterfall, much to the panic of both the Flintstones and the Hatrocks. Fred climbs on a branch and rescues both Pebbles and Slab. The Hatrocks call a truce and invite the Flintstones and the Rubbles for a party. However, the truce is short-lived. At the party, Fred sees Mona's painting for himself and unwisely repeats the same words Rory previously said. So the Flintstones quickly pack up their belongings and drive off in the moonlight, with the Hatrocks chasing after them! Trivia: The intro features a scene which was meant for later in the show. Fred leaves Tennestone, the "wet state" and enters Arkanstone, the "dry state." This was a joke about liquor laws. Also, since Welch's was the Flintstones' sponsor, they wrote in a scene where Pebbles has a craving for grape juice! What I liked: I liked the scene where Fred and Barney purchase juice form a vending machine and Barney asks for a 2nd one. "Make it 2," he shouts. An irritated monkey hands him his drink and says "I hear ya, I hear ya, I'm not deaf, you know!" Also, the possum that came out of the pie wryly asking "You were expecting maybe blackbirds?!" Most of all, it's funny to see the glee in the Hatrocks to have someone shoot, both at the beginning and at the end when Fred puts his foot in his mouth! And how can I forget Fred's last line "This is the last they'll see of the last of the Flintstones!"? Moral: When at a party, respect the hosts, their family and their treasures- even if you think they're garbage! 10 shotguns out of 10!
