- Samantha Stewart: [Sam has come to pick up her boss from the SOE HQ] Good afternoon sir!
- DCS Christopher Foyle: Glad to see you!
- Samantha Stewart: I was rather worried they weren't going to let you out.
- DCS Christopher Foyle: So was I.
- Samantha Stewart: So what do they actually do here?
- DCS Christopher Foyle: You wouldn't believe me, if I told you.
- Samantha Stewart: Are you going to?
- DCS Christopher Foyle: No.
- Samantha Stewart: [to Milner] Do you know what you two need?
- [meaning him and Foyle]
- Samantha Stewart: Something to take your mind off things. A jolly good murder.
- [laughs]
- Samantha Stewart: That'd do it.
- Mark Nicholson: Don't worry about us, Mr. Foyle. We may seem like we hate each other's guts, but actually we're a perfect team.
- Eric Stafford: Then I'm a monkey's uncle.
- Mark Nicholson: Don't bring your relations into this, old chap.
- Samantha Stewart: [Foyle and Sam are about to leave for Levenham to investigate a lead] Leavenham? In Hampshire?
- DCS Christopher Foyle: Which is where you and I are off to.
- Samantha Stewart: Well, that's where my uncle lives. He's the vicar at St Mary's.
- [points to a spot on the wall map]
- Sergeant Paul Milner: The same as your father?
- Samantha Stewart: Yes, I've got quite a few vicars in the family.
- [she and Milner peer at the map]
- Samantha Stewart: My grandfather was a bishop.
- Samantha Stewart: [to Foyle] You can't believe anything you read in the papers these days. If it's not the Ministry of Information cutting everything out, it's all just propaganda.
- [sighs]
- Samantha Stewart: Won't you miss it, sir?
- [referring to Foyle's impending transfer]
- DCS Christopher Foyle: [replies wearily] The Chronicle?
- Samantha Stewart: All this, police work.
- [Foyle's telephone rings, saving him]
- Samantha Stewart: I mean, if you join Naval Intelligence, it's all just paperwork.
- DCS Christopher Foyle: [holds up a finger to Sam and answers the phone] Yes... . Right... . Thank you, on our way.
- Samantha Stewart: [continues determinedly as Foyle gets up to leave] I mean, do you see what I mean? Here we go again. You never know what's around the corner in this job.
- DCS Christopher Foyle: That's enough, end of conversation. The subject's off limits, thank you.
- [they leave]
- DCS Christopher Foyle: You know, I have a feeling I wouldn't get on with the sort of people you employ here.
- Lt. Col. James Wintringham: You mean Leo Maccoby.
- DCS Christopher Foyle: I know him as Leo Mason. I put him in prison.
- Lt. Col. James Wintringham: A waste of a good man.
- DCS Christopher Foyle: Oh, you think so? He was a pimp. He was employing girls of 15.
- Lt. Col. James Wintringham: A waste of a bad man, then.
