I guess the character that Greer Garson plays here hadn't seen those Kay Francis, Ruth Chatterton or Helen Twelvetrees movies in the early 30's where a glamorous woman, married to a powerful man, ends up a victim of blackmail which usually results in someone getting murdered. In this film, a former lover long before her marriage blackmails her with letters, and when he's found dead, the apparent killer blackmails her, she believing that an earring that she left behind could be used against her. Husband Eduard Franz is quite the loyal spouse, and Norman Lloyd (the man who falls from the Statue of Liberty in "Saboteur" and would live to the ripe old age of 107) is delightfully slimy. Nothing you haven't seen before in hundreds of pre-code movies, so it's dated by 50's standards, but Garson makes it fun.
