Everybody on board makes that noise
FlushingCaps22 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
If there was a better Get Smart than two episodes earlier when we met Harry Hoo, it had to be this two-part episode. Since it was really one long episode, I rate both parts the same and review the entire episode as one.

Max is at a waterfront diner, waiting to meet a contact who can tell him on what ship the plans for the nuclear amphibian battleship are going to be smuggled out on that night. He encounters a drunk who shakes so much in drinking at Smart's table, that Max used a line my Dad sometimes used with me: "Careful, some of that's getting in your mouth."

After the Chief shows up to help, the informant is killed, able to only give the name of the ship, but not his killer, who was heard leaving the scene making a strange sort of a clip-clop noise.

Smart and 99 book cabins on the freighter. In seeking the person who made the sound described, they find a dancer with castanets, a Portuguese polo player in a wheel chair, a man with a cane, and a man with a wooden leg all make the same sound. On the phone with the Chief when he asks if anyone on board makes that sound, Max responds, "Everyone on board makes that sound."

One of my favorite scenes is shortly after Max meets Ming, servant to the ship's captain. When Ming speaks, Max tells 99 he has a terrible speech impediment. 99 informs him that he was speaking Chinese. She converses with Ming, asking where they can find the captain. Ming answers, "Quido syang fong." Max asks 99 what he said, and she responds in a Max-like manner, saying, "Quido syang fong."

Later, Max is having a riotous conversation with the captain in his cabin. Max says something about the Chinese servant. Groman responds, with great astonishment," Chinese! Good heavens, he's Chinese!... I thought he had a speech impediment."

We actually see 99 do another silly thing that seems like something Max would do, which can't briefly be described. I also loved a scene where she quickly sets up a deck chair in about 5 seconds, while Max struggles and fails to get his to set up properly. He gives up, switches chairs with 99 to talk to the Chief on the phone, and in about 5 more seconds, she has set up the chair Max could not set up.

Agent 44 is at his funniest, complaining about his plight, always concealing himself in awkward places. He also has a great bit when Max boasts that he figured out a coded message from 44 in no time at all. Agent 44 says, "Wait till next time. I'll use a code so complex you'll never figure it out."

There were several physical scenes that added to this episode, combined with the clever serious plot. This combined episode rates an easy 10 from me, hilarious almost from start to finish.
