HELPFUL GIDGET, INCORPORATED!
tcchelsey18 November 2023
Dedicated to all us writers and then some... Gidge has had enough with the school newspaper's HELPFUL HANNAH advice column, which is anything but help! What to do?

Do it yourself!

Gidge inquires within, only to find that Hannah is actually a guy (played by funny Jim Connell), but it's a temp gig until they find someone else. FOUND. Gidget takes charge and becomes the new Hannah. Complications are on the horizon, and there's one special case on her desk that involves a girl and a would-be rocket high school scientist???

Again, Sally Field's expressions are priceless. Spot on for this goofy episode. This was the only episode directed by Lee Philips, who headed many episodes for ANDY GRIFFITH. He later directed episodes for the WALTONS and was also an actor, noted for PERRY MASON and the TWILIGHT ZONE.

Jim Connell (as Norman) is always fun to watch, who later guested on such sitcoms as LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE and the PARTRDIGE FAMILY.

Look for Barbara Hershey in a small role as Ellen.

Great ending with some wise input from Professor Lawrence, as always.

SEASON 1 EPISODE 29 remastered dvd box set.

Gidget the Advice Columnist
JordanThomasHall8 September 2017
Gidget (Sally Field) is critical of the school newspaper's unhelpful "Helpful Hannah" column. She is shocked to find the writer is a guy-Norman Crowley (Jim Connell) and asks, "How can you be Helpful Hannah?" "They didn't require a physical," Norman comically replies. He is filling in until the paper can find someone to take over the column. He quits and the editor Peggy Bell (Candice Howard) talks Gidget into being Helpful Hannah. Gidget gets involved in a letter and feels compelled to give in-person advise to the male writer "Wretched" who feels his girlfriend isn't committed to him. At the library she mistakes "Wretched" for Ted (Rick Cooper) and the two are seen by Ted's girlfriend Ellen (Barbara Hershey). Gidget replies in the paper for "Wretched" to come by after-surf hangout The Shack Saturday afternoon to "find the help you're after". Once again she mistakes "Wretched" for another guy by sitting down with Toby (Robert Beach) whose girlfriend Kathy (Jewel Jaffe) works at The Shack and angrily dumps ice cream on him. Gidget is surprised to find who "Wretched" is (although it became predictable early on).

Oddly, in this episode Gidget twice gets an idea and Jeannie's blink sound effect from "I Dream of Jeannie" is used. The two shows shared a production company, Screen Gems.
