I'LL JUST COME ALONG FOR THE RIDE?
tcchelsey2 December 2023
This is another one of those everything goes wrong and WHY??? ... episodes.

The story is definitely a first as Gidge and her guy pal Toby (Robert Beach) have company --his dad, Mel (played by popular actor Herb Voland). Since Toby's mom is away visting her sister, Mel is kind of lonely and decides to spend more "quality time" with his son and his date. Heaven forbid!

There's a classic scene where a cop walks up to Toby's car at the beach, peeks inside to have a talk with the young couple -- only to have Mel pop up in the back seat. It also looks like Mel was sleeping on the back seat the whole time? Voland was a very popular actor, making many appearances on BEWITCHED, later playing generals on M. A. S. H.

In meanwhile, there's another interesting exam with future psychologist John, this time his subject is professor Lawrence. John hooks up electrodes to Gidge's dad and asks him a series of questions, looking like a scene from a low budget sci fi film.

This was the very first directing assignment for actor Christopher Cary. Cary was known for a supporting role on GARRISONS GORILLAS, and many other popular tv shows at the time. In all, Robert Beach appeared in 6 episodes of the series, either as Toby or Pete. Take your pick.

Yes, two's company and three's a crowd!

SEASON 1 EPISODE 31 remastered Columbia dvd box set.

Interfering Father
JordanThomasHall11 September 2017
Gidget (Sally Field) and her boyfriend Toby (Robert Beach) are being accompanied on their dates by Toby's well-meaning father Mel (familiar character actor Herb Voland). Toby's mother has went away visiting her sister, prompting Mel to try and make up not spending a lot of time with Toby. Toby doesn't want to hurt his father's feelings, so Gidget talks to her psychology student brother-in-law John (Peter Duel). John thinks she is talking about her dad and decides to take it on himself to draw Gidget's father Russ Lawrence (Don Porter) away from her. John makes Russ his subject for his term project. This leaves him to cancel his poker date with Mel, who tags along with Toby and Gidget once again. Meanwhile, John is comically and needlessly wearing himself out trying to occupy Russ. How long will the miscommunication last?
