Luke has two different versions of how Luke's Diner was established.
In episode 2.8 "The Ins and Outs of Inns": LORELAI: So, who taught you about all this business stuff? Your dad? LUKE: Please. My dad didn't even have a checking account until I finally got taller then he was. He bought this land with cash from working construction, built this place himself. Didn't have a bookkeeper, an accountant, or anything. LORELAI: Wow, so you had no one showing you the ropes. LUKE: Nope, I figured I had to just dive in on my own, fail if that's my destiny, and forget what the experts say.
Then later, in episode 5.3 "Written In The Stars,": LUKE: Yeah. And then later on when my dad died and I wanted to turn the hardware store into a diner, you know, Buddy really helped me out. LORELAI: That's so nice. LUKE: He's a good guy. He really showed me how to run a restaurant, how to order -- everything, basically. I mean, I couldn't have done it without him.
