"Why, computers are the coming thing!" enraptures Miss Lou Ann Poovie at the beginning of this episode. And how right she was. They came, they conquered, and they're still here in 2021 dominating all of our lives. But in this particular episode the computers are used for dating. Actually, there isn't a computer at all, the whole operation is fake and is operated by Friendly Freddy, the friendly con man. (BTW, that's not a spoiler you find that out in the first few minutes.) Gomer signs up for the service, but only at the urging of his "best girl" Miss Lou Ann Poovie. Not a smart move by Miss Poovie.
To start his dating business Friendly Freddy hires a girl from the bakery, a pretty 5'4" blue-eyed blonde, to pretend to be everybody's date and he sends her out with all the clients. That's the set up. Actually, Gomer is their first client and the girl is glad to finally have something to do besides just sit around. Freddy introduces her to Gomer and she promptly fakes a North Carolina accent to further sucker Gomer into the scam. Gomer, always the trusting sucker, takes the bait and Freddy takes his money.
We don't see Sgt. Carter in this episode until halfway through. To show you how times have changed Sgt. Carter thinks that 10 dollars is a lot of money! Ah, the good old days when 10 dollars could actually buy something. That's what Gomer paid for the dating service and that makes Carter very angry. "Gomer you are really stupid!" he yells. He vows to go down there and straighten that Freddy out.
Anyway, all of this starts to cause friction between Gomer and Miss Lou Ann Poovie (even though it was her idea!) and that's the heart of the story.
Some good laughs in this one, especially the scene where Sgt. Carter is in the outdoor dining area of a restaurant when the wind and cold is blasting and he is freezing his fanny off. It's a pretty good episode and I gave it a "7".
