Early on in this episode we see Gomer and Lou Ann have a kiss. Lou Ann made the move, of course, and not Gomer. I think that's the first time I've ever seen them kiss. I was beginning to wonder if Gomer and his "best girl" would ever touch anything together. They finally did. Maybe they did before and I just missed it.
Anyway, Lou Ann's father is coming to visit her with just one day's notice and he's never met Gomer. Lou Ann tells Gomer not to be frightened of her father and that leaves him bewildered. Why would he be afraid of her father? Be afraid, Gomer. Be very afraid.
So the old man shows up and gives his daughter a great big kiss on the lips. Smack! And then he looks her body over and says that she's wasting away, just a skinny little thing. He blames it on air pollution.
Her father immediately wants to talk about her old boyfriend, Monroe, a former big college football star. But she doesn't want to talk about him and tells her father that she never really loved him even though they almost got married.
Later on Gomer shows up for dinner to meet the father. The father is not impressed. He's looking for a real "man's man", but instead finds Gomer. He's less than thrilled to find out that Gomer makes paper flowers and hooks rugs.
The father tries to find out if Gomer has any ambition. Gomer says he's not educated. The father makes it clear that that's no excuse, that Gomer should want to better himself. Gomer just shrugs.
Then the father calls Monroe (who is in town, surprise, surprise) and invites him to come there and win Lou Ann back. That's his plan. And that's the basic premise of the episode.
As you can tell this episode is something of a soap opera. There are some laughs, but it's not super funny. And Sgt. Carter doesn't appear at all, unfortunately.
Overall I thought it was a little below average.
