- As the Bannermans mark the anniversary of the premature death of their little girl Catherine, Maggie Rigby, a former school-friend of surviving daughter Adele comes to the Grand, supposedly to convalesce after an operation, though she confides in Adele that she has just had an abortion. She is selfish, mischievous and clearly troubled, annoying guests and staff alike. She gets Kate drunk, causing Esme and Monica to cover for her. She explains to Adele that her bad conduct is due to her feeling worthless after being exploited by a man. Adele in turn feels that she is second best to her dead sister and argues with her father, although they are ultimately reconciled. With the truth out Maggie is collected from the Grand by her widowed father. Their conversation makes it clear that they have had an incestuous relationship and that he was responsible for the aborted child but Adele is too naive to understand this and envies Maggie as she leaves.—don @ minifie-1
- A chill descends on Sarah and John Bannerman's relationship on the anniversary of their first child's death. Although 19 years have passed since that tragic event, they have yet to come to terms with it and John in particular feels he is responsible for her death. With her parents grieving on this difficult day, Adele Bannerman - who still feels like something of a forgotten child amid the repressed grief - strikes a friendship with a hotel guest of similar age, Maggie Rigby. She is there to recuperate after supposedly having her appendix removed but in fact has recently had an abortion. If anything Maggie is wild, getting herself and Adele drunk, being boisterous and rude in the lobby and then spiking housemaid Kate's drink. Adele resists her parents authority and when she tells them the nature of Maggie's medical procedure, her father arranges for Maggie's father to collect her. Only on her departure does it become clear who the father of the child was.—garykmcd
