Among this episode's writers is Rob Reiner, who was then starring as Michael "Meathead" Stivic on the CBS hit sitcom All in the Family (1971). This was the only episode Reiner wrote for the series. Not coincidentally, Reiner at the time was married to "Happy Days" creator and producer Garry Marshall's younger sister Penny Marshall, the future star of the Happy Days spinoff Laverne & Shirley (1976).

In the pilot episode, the local hangout is "Arthur's." This was a real restaurant at 1001 S. Victory Blvd in Burbank, CA. When the show continued, a facsimile exterior was built in the northeast corner of the Paramount lot beside N Van Ness Avenue and renamed "Arnold's"
Arnold's Drive-In was portrayed as "Arthur's Restaurant," with exteriors filmed at a real restaurant at the time with the same name in Burbank, California.
