Fun

To raise money for a local youth center, Nancy and friends decide to revive a play that was last performed 20 years ago. To everyone's surprise, the original actors agree to come back for the play. But is the cast's motivation really altruistic or does this group have another reason for returning? As soon as rehearsals begin, strange things start happening. Is the old theater really haunted by a phantom? Nancy is determined to get to the bottom of things.

In a couple of different ways, A Haunting We Will Go doesn't feel much like a traditional Nancy Drew episode. For much of the runtime, Nancy and Co play second fiddle to rest of the cast. Not surprising, really, when consider the rest of the cast includes the likes of Bob Crane, Victor Buono, Dina Merrill, and Pippa Scott. I enjoy Pamela Sue Martin's work in the series, but she didn't stand a chance against an over-the-top actor like Buono. He, and the others, dominate every scene in which they appear. Another reason that this episode doesn't feel like a normal Nancy Drew episode is the amount of comedy. While there's usually a laugh or two to be had in every episode, this one is jam-packed with funny bits. The scene where Buono and Crane are carrying bricks in the alleyway is very funny. Still, the final reveal is handled quite nicely and the solution to the mystery is satisfying. While it's not overly difficult to figure out why the original actors came back for the play and the phantom's identity, the way Nancy weaves the solution into the live play performance is a nice touch and very enjoyable. In fact, the whole thing is enjoyable. It may not feel like Nancy Drew, but A Haunting We Will Go is a lot of fun and very entertaining. And for me, entertainment is what it's all about.

One of my favorites

Warning: Spoilers
I saw this as a little kid and this is one of my favorite of the Nancy Drew episodes, not like there were ever that many unfortunately. Maybe more effort was put into the writing because of the guest cast this week. Somehow, it seems less far-fetched than some of the other episodes. Jean Rasey as George is also my favorite of Nancy's sidekicks, even though she's nothing like the George in the books. Even Ned is less doofy than they make him in a few other episodes.

Weird fact, Carl Betz died of cancer about 5 months after this aired. It makes me hope those weren't real bricks he had to carry around. Wikipedia says he kept his diagnosis a secret, so who knows. Maybe they were real. And Bob Crane was also dead in less than a year.

I enjoyed the running bit where Crane's character would make a claim and it turned out that he got it from a tv job, like when he started how slowly a corpse could rot and it turned out it came from Dr Kildare. His line reading there was so deadpan and yet funny. What a loss he didn't get to be in more stuff.

I also sort of giggle at Dina Merrill making digs at Nancy as an actress, especially at the end when she predicts her acting career won't last. It didn't.

Murder in the Fourth Act

Nancy and her friends are putting on a stage show that will bring in money to build a youth center.

The original play was at this theater years ago. Nancy got all the original actors to come and put on the play for free for her cause.

Funny things start happening. Lights start falling, windows that were locked are opened and people almost get killed.

The actors arrive and all hate each other. More dangerous "accidents" continue. Nancy's father and friends think she is wrong. They actors have been blackmailed and each one thinks the other actor is blackmailing them.

Lots of suspense and moving around in the dark. The plot is to find out who was trying to kill the actors, who was blackmailing them and why. What was the big secret.

A haunting we Will Go

To raise money for charity, Nancy revives a play in a theater that is supposed to be haunted. Actors from the original cast return to do the play, but they are all acting suspicious, and Nancy is determined to discover the secret of the theater phantom who is stalking the stage area, causing certain mishaps happening.

There's a nostalgic theatre setting, an exciting idea of a phantom on the loose, and his ire is aimed at the actors of an old play who reunite. It's not too much of an engaging episode, but it's amusing enough. However it's the witty barbed comments by the actors that makes this watchable.
