"Tolliver Gang" finds John Vernon (fifth of eight) cast in his largest role of the series, as Cap'n Tolliver, leading a band of former pirates to plunder and riches in the backwoods of America. The opening scene finds he and first mate Sligo (Bruce Webb, last of two) kidnapping the wife (Jacqueline Barnett, first of two) and daughter of Squire Palmer (John Paris, third of five), who implores the Commissioner General (Ben Lennick, second of three) to ensure his family's safety with Hawkeye and Chingachgook all ready to pursue their quarry. One special rifle on the Commissioner's wall inspires Hawkeye to pose as the infamous outlaw Four O'Diamonds, with a $50 reward for capture certain to attract the attention of Cap'n Tolliver. Chingachgook identifies two pirates at the trading post, where the loose lipped Proprietor (Daryl Masters, fifth of seven) is the first to recognize Hawkeye's gun by its four diamonds. Infiltrating the Tolliver gang is easy enough, but saving two lives is quite a different matter. John Vernon has a field day using snuff, one of the show's liveliest villains.
