Over-the-Top But Still Funny

"We do full voice on this show!" was Lucy's mantra. But I'm sure even the formidable Ms. Ball was tempted to ask comedienne Totie Fields to tone it down for this Season 5 episode that has Fields accusing "that hussy" Lucy Carter of husband-stealing. Unlikely stud Herbie Faye plays the milkman/husband who is causing Lucy to receive threatening letters and phone calls prior to meeting Fields face-to-face for the big showdown. Lucy being on the end of such abusive behavior is at least a new theme that hasn't been done before. Also, the word "Sex" is mentioned in the script, which was quite progressive for this show.

Fields' unhinged non-stop rant in the middle of the episode is one of the most over-the-top guest performances on any Lucy show ever but it's the best part of the episode. The finale doesn't measure up and to me it doesn't fit at all (Fields delivers her rendition of "You're Nobody Til Somebody Loves You"). There are some politically-incorrect fat jokes that the body-positive snowflakes of today would strongly object to and no doubt cry for this episode to be "cancelled". Funny thing is, comparing body standards and fitness levels of today to 50 years ago when this aired, Fields' size would be considered average by 2023 standards.

Not a great episode, but the middle section is quite amusing and gives you an idea of what Miss Totie Fields was all about.
