A most unusual student.
blanbrn20 September 2007
This "Hitchhiker" episode titled "And If We Dream" is really what you expect not much drama or surprise just a supernatural tale that has an expected fate that the viewer feels will happen. Stephen Collins(TV's "7TH Heaven") stars as a high school teacher in a small rural Kansas town who one day notices a bright new and young student named Roseanne(Roberta Weiss) who's new to town just moved in from San Francisco. Of course the Collins character feels temptation and the desire for lust and passion with his new female student. Yet this student harbors a dark secret she has telepathic powers. All the power lies within her dreams. The love making and passion is done by dreams, and slowly one by one the Collins character is a man who becomes haunted and confused. Finally the girl's imaginary world holds him sentenced to detention as his lust backfired to a nightmare sentence. Really the viewer could see this coming all along.

A neatly eerie and sexy episode

Warning: Spoilers
Married Todd Fields (a sound and likable performance by Stephen Collins) teaches a high school photography class in a quiet country town, but has greater ambitions to be a photographer in a big city. Todd gets led astray when he falls under the seductive spell of attractive new student Roseanne Lucas (a sturdy and beguiling portrayal by enticing brunette stunner Roberta Weiss). Director Mai Zetterling, working from an absorbing script by Leora Barish, acutely nails the stifling ennui of the sleepy rural setting, creates an intoxicating erotic atmosphere (there's a genuinely hot love scene between the leads in a barn), and presents several pleasingly surreal dream set pieces. Moreover, Zetterling and Barish handle the potentially lurid older man involved with a much younger woman subject matter with admirable taste and restraint while putting a delicately spooky supernatural spin on said premise. The sunny cinematography sharply captures the peaceful and pastoral beauty of the rustic location. Michel Rubini's shivery score hits the subtly shuddery spot. As a sweet added bonus, the delectable Ms. Weiss bares her gorgeous body a few times. Nice bummer ending, too. Worth a watch for fans of this show.

The consequences of lust and temptation. Great episode.

Todd Fields (Stephen Collins) is a married small town high school photography teacher who dreams of ambitions to become a photographer in the big city. One day he's fascinated by the work of new student Roseanne Lucas (Roberta Weiss) who he begins a friendship with. However, Roseanne has a mysterious power of telekinesis threw dreams, and slowly begins to seduce Todd who starts to fall under her spell a decision he will soon live to regret. This is a fun well written story about the overall horrors of temptation and price you can pay for it. I love how it keeps the softcore sex but manages to make it sensual and dreamlike over the series usual sleaze aspects. It's hard to look at Stephen Collins in anything other than 7th Heaven but he does fine here as does the beautiful Roeberta Weiss who I'll always remember from the Tales from the Darkside episode Inside the Closet. The twist is fun and fitting even though a bit predictable, but still showed that the series could delve into the supernatural when it wanted too. Side Note: there's a hilarious seen during a high school fair in the middle of a corn field where a high school group of kids decked out in full 80s heavy metal vibes jam in concert and it alone helps me give this a solid rating.
