Season 1 of Home Improvement was a big success, so now, we're back for Season 2. There will be more of the same, plus some considerable changes for the characters we've grown to love. Anyway, we begin with Tool Time and a salute to safety. Tim and Al welcome back the K&B boys from Bay City, Dwayne Hoover, Pete Bilker and Rock Lannigan. Despite being all about safety, there were a few mishaps involving a hot rivet and Dwayne's head. Remember, when you set your helmet down, always do it right side up. But before they can get to anything relevant to safety, Tim decides to read some hate mail he got from a viewer who thinks Tim is a Neanderthal and Tool Time sucks. A man with taste, I see. Tim responds to the criticism by torching the letter with a Binford 6100 butane torch. Way to handle it like an adult, Tim. So after that non sequitur, Jill is setting up a super romantic dinner that night for she and Tim at home. Speaking of romance, it seems Brad is really drawn to Jennifer. He's slowly entering manhood. He gets a special feeling whenever he's around her, and it gets bigger when ever they're together. Anyway, as Jill prepares dinner, Tim has gone down to Big Mike's with Al and the K&B boys where they race peanuts down their tape measures. What, you never did? After Tim wins another round, he calls up Jill, who more-than-subtly says she wants him to come home, but Tim is of course oblivious to the signals she's sending out, and says he'll be right home.
Several hours later, Tim walks through the door to a dark house and a livid wife. Jill chastises him for being late, how she planned this dinner for 2 days, and how she thought she made herself cleat on the phone. The dumbkopf still doesn't get it, and even remarks that he already ate dinner at the bar. Next morning, Tim and Brad have a father-son talk about the birds and the bees, or rather when the bees punch the birds, while Tim makes breakfast. But when Jill comes downstairs, she thinks he made it for her and was just about to forgive him, until that twerp Randy asks his dad why Mom is eating his eggs. Another big problem Tim and Jill have with each other is lack of communication, Tim feels he's very clear, while Jill isn't, and she feels the exact opposite. Apparently Jill has forgotten that she's married to a man who needs everything spelled out for him. Well, still not having clue 1 what he did wrong, Tim has a talk with Wilson, who lets him see that if he isn't paying attention, certain messages will go unheeded. Ergo, that's why he failed to show up to his own romantic dinner, he wasn't paying attention to the signals Jill was sending out. That night, Jill gets a visit from Tim's identical twin, a telephone repairman named Fred. He tinkers around with the phone while indirectly apologizing for not picking up Jill's signals. She accepts the apology from old "Fred", and they smooch and make-up, just as the phone blows out. To cap things off, Randy and Mark brush up on their new hobby of voyeurism, trying to spy on Jennifer and Brad, or in this case, Tim and Jill.
During Tim and Jill's fight scene when the former comes home later, you might have noticed an instance where Tim slightly jumps when Jill turns around and snaps at him. That moment was actually spontaneous. Tim Allen revealed in his "User's Guide" to Home Improvement special that Pat's acting caught him off guard and actually startled him. Proves she was a good casting choice. As for this episode, the overall message is good, the story is relatable, and as for that opening Tool Time with Tim burning that letter... I think that was just a bit excessive. I wonder if that moment was scripted, or it was Tim Allen bringing out an actual angry letter he'd received? Who knows? Anyway, check out Read My Hips.
