Most underrated episode!
kellielulu31 July 2022
I never knew so many disliked or even hated this episode until I saw it on some message boards. This one has been a much loved episode in our family.

I won't go into detail but it's part fantasy part musical. Fred and Ethel have a particularly memorable part in this episode and their usual bickering is put to hilarious use . It's definitely better then some episodes that have been overrated. It's just pure fun . Sit back and enjoy!

A love/hate show

The episode is either loved or hated. I, on the other hand, don't hate it but I don't love it. It's not as good as The Operetta episode. If I had to choose a musical episode, I choose The Operetta. But this one has funny moments like Ricky taking a lock of her hair and sings it -- very funny. And the songs are sort of catchy, the sword dance is my favorite part, the extras are great. The singers and dancers are doing their best, give them credit for their talent. It reminds me of a Televised play so that's a bonus. Fred and Ethel as a two headed dragon, why not? It's a dream fantasy fairytale so anything goes, you can't judge it. The best joke for me is Ethel saying they won't eat Ricky because Spanish food gives them heart burn.

It's a fairy tale I love Lucy episode that you either go with it or you can't.

A clever musical within a show

Just echoing the comments here. If you put aside the usual Lucy storylines and just enjoy this little musical it's really fun.

I like the inside jokes like "henna rinse" and "Xavier MacCougat!" Lots of clever dialogue and catchy songs. I've been singing them since I was a kid.

Vivian Vance and Bill Frawley get the award for acting. They did not like each other but had to share a two-person costume! It was funny how the tune of their lullaby was the British version of Away in a Manger.

Desilu was smart to create the Hollywood, European and Connecticut episodes. It kept the show fresh over the years. I know the show is dated and has stereotypes and all of that but it's still a comforting show for me to watch.

An absolute must see !!!

This is I Love Lucy at It's finest. Everyone involved in the making of this episode deserved an award. The writers, composers, choreographers, costume and set designers all went above and beyond their usual greatness and lest we forget the cast. Lucy looks even younger than usual as does Desi. This is one episode where Desi allows himself to be on the receiving end of jokes rather than being the logical, sensible anchor that usually saves the day. His holding an arched back after Lucy dips him is incredible. Lucy, of course handles props like a pro particularly when she does her sword dance. Fred and Ethel as the two headed Dragon was fantastic. I have this episode on dvd in both black and white and also the colorized version. I highly recommend that you watch this on dvd so as not to lose any portions via edited for tv syndication. It's not just a joy to watch but it looks like everyone had a good time making it. A timeless classic not often mentioned in the "favorites " list.

Ignore the Internet Conspiracy Against this Episode
dizexpat15 February 2022
The low rating of this brilliant episode is the result of a silly internet conspiracy. Pay no attention to it.

This is the second of only two episodes of "I Love Lucy" that is a pure musical (the equally brilliant "The Operetta" is the other).

It's difficult to imagine a sit-com today going through the trouble of coming up with original songs and dance numbers for an episode. Yet that's just what "I Love Lucy" did and the result is pure joy.

For once Lucy actually gets to sing without her singing voice being the punchline. She does quite a decent job. Ricky pretending to be Scottish is hilarious. Even better is Fred and Ethel as the two-headed dragon.

The songs are memorably funny and tuneful.

This episode is near-perfect yet is ranked lower than a great many lesser "I Love Lucy" episodes. That is a terrible shame.
