Ricky is booked on a tour of Europe but says he can't afford to take Lucy. Lucy of course objects but he promises her a later trip and she is somewhat satisfied but disappointed. When Ethel who's already heard the news from the butcher ( yes the butcher! ) she's far more skeptical that Ricky will follow through. Slowly Lucy agrees after a mild standoff Lucy talks Ricky into letting her go with certain conditions. In short order Fred is made band manager and Lucy and Ethel must raise the money to go. They set up a phony charity although with every intention of giving a prize in a raffle. Lucy learns it's illegal and may be prosecuted.
A turn of events enables a real charity to benefit and Lucy and Ethel are able to save face.
Another turn of events has Ethel making a sacrifice that turns out not to be necessary- much to Fred's relief.
