This episode is loosely based on the "Dark Hulk" story arc from "The Incredible Hulk" (Vol. 1) #370-371, written by Peter David and illustrated by Dale Keown.
Dr. Strange had made a previous appearance in the Marvel Animated Universe in Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994) during the episode Sins of the Fathers Chapter 1: Doctor Strange (1996) and was voiced by John Vernon. Since, Vernon had a regular role on this series as General Thaddeus Ross, it was decided to re-cast the role and Maurice LaMarche was chosen to voice Dr. Strange in this episode.
The comic book version of Dark Hulk differs from the animated one. In the comics, Dark Hulk was black and white and had a bowlcut hairstyle similar to what Grey Hulk has in the comics. This animated Dark Hulk is purple skinned with dreadlocks. The purple skin comes from Dark Hulk's purple shadowed appearance on the cover of "The Incredible Hulk" (Vol. 1) #371 and the dreadlocks are inspired by Kevin Michael Richardson's hairstyle at the time of production.
