Murder in the string quartet
bkoganbing25 November 2013
By all accounts Kevin Hagen was one nasty dude as well as being a top concert master. We see him at the beginning of the show murdered by an unknown person using a gun with a silencer on it. But he teases the killer before he dies saying he's named him and he'll never find out how because it's in code.

Which is what the Ironside team has to figure out in order to catch the killer. It's a musical code and only Raymond Burr among his staff is a lover of classical music. It comes down to the members of a classical string quartet. And there are a few other red herrings tossed in for good measure.

For classical music fans as well as fans of the show.

A mini-Columbo episode for Ironside
TopekaBob15 February 2022
There's a Columbo vibe to this episode as Ironside and his team have to figure out who the killer is by deciphering a code taken from some short musical performances. They should have gone all-in and shown the killer at the beginning and then just focused on how they solve the crime.

Ironside sure is a renaissance man. From chamber music to war hero to sports knowledge, he knows it all.

Kevin Hagen plays the murdered musician but this long time actor only gets about 3 minutes at the beginning before he's axed. Reminds me of a couple of Henry Daniell's appearances on "Thriller." Watch for Ken Renard as the security guard. Renard looks like he's about to meet his reward during his scene here, but he went on to act for 12 more years! He will go down in TV history for two classic performances in "Thriller," in the episodes Pigeons from Hell and the Return of Andrew Bentley.

Does anyone buy Tim Matheson (from Animal House) as a chamber music musician?
