Taking it on the Road

You might think that after a while, the team of writers would run out of ideas for scripts in which Ironside gets caught in dangerous and criminal capers while on vacation or overseas. Yet thus far in this series, every single one of these has been a gem, as they allow the chief to use his entire smörgåsbord of ingenuity, courage, brawn, shrewdness, and brains to survive and outwit his enemies while on the road. Moreover, while you know that he will obviously survive the ordeal, the range of ways that can happen is so much broader, that it allows for greater tension, excitement and surprises. Sit back (if you can) and enjoy the ride. Super fun.

A Summons for help

Although Raymond Burr in real life owned a south sea island, the filming of this episode of Ironside was apparently shot at the studio. The Chief takes a vacation to Fiji to renew an old wartime friendship with Alan Napier. Reference is made to the battle of Guadalcanal where they ostensibly served. Presumably Napier was a coast watcher because I don't recall any British troops there.

In any event before Burr arrives Napier is kidnapped as part of a gold smuggling operation. And then Burr gets himself kidnapped as well, but not before sending out an SOS and getting Don Mitchell and Don Galloway to interrupt their vacations.

I imagine that scenes without the cast were shot in Fiji for atmosphere, but Ironside and his crew never got to that tropical paradise.
