- Ironside writes a letter of recommendation for a pool hustler who plans to attend college. When the young man changes his mind and agrees to a high-stakes game against a legendary billiards champion, the chief wants to know why.
- Jack Albertson stars as Money Howard, the greatest pool hustler in the world. When he comes into town for a match with a young player(Tim), it appears he throws the match at a crucial point. Tim's brother, Bobby, bet against him, and is in to the bad guy for 15k. Ironside knows Tim, and knows he wants to go to college, but Tim acts like he wants to be a pool hustler now that his brother is in trouble. Tim will have to work for Vance, the sleazy manager. Ironside wants to know why Tim has backed out of his dream of going to school, and Eve finds out surreptitiously from Vance's girl. Ironside tells Tim he can get him out of the arrangement, and also convinces Bobby. Unfortunately, Bobby goes to confront Vance. Meanwhile, Ironside has been spreading low level rumors that Money Howard threw the game, ruining Vance's ability to schedule Tim's matches. Bobby has disappeared, and Tim tells Vance he'll play Money again to make good on Bobby's debt. Howard has $25,000 of his own money riding on the game this time, so he declines Ironside's subtle suggestion to throw the game. As the game goes on, Sgt Brown and Eve are looking for Bobby to try and keep him from being killed. Money Howard wins the game, and Eve and Ed race to stop Vance's men before its too late. Its amusing, in 2009, to see these old shows where a couple of cell phones could change everything. Ed and Eve have a table of landlines, and the bad guys use the pay phones.
