Many of the external shots of the submarine, including the scene where Harm and Meg are lowered into the submarine, the torpedo being launched and the maneuvers in the attempt to trick Grover, are lifted directly from the film The Hunt for Red October (1990). This is because the shows producers did not have the resources to film their own scenes, so they re-used footage and sets from other T.V. Shows and Films, throughout the series.
Rex Linn, who plays the sub skipper, would return as the continuing character Mark Sokol in Season 3 and beyond.
Most of the action here takes place aboard a fictional submarine, USS Tigershark (SSN-28). No vessel of the US Navy has ever borne the name Tigershark or Tiger Shark. However, four submarines have borne the name of USS Shark (SS-8, SS-174, SS-314, and SSN-591). Likewise SSN-28 does not yet exist. The highest number in the new series of hull numbers for submarines of the US Navy is SSN-23, assigned to USS Jimmy Carter, of the Seawolf class.
Harm gets a new partner LTJG Meg Austin played by Tracey Needham. The producers on NBC found that David James Elliott and Andrea Parker lacked chemistry in the Pilot so Harm's partner was recast.
Two of the guest stars on this episode are Ryan Hurst, who plays Grover, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who plays a weapons officer. They go on to star together in The Walking Dead (2010) as Beta and Negan.
