JOHNNY RINGO "The Derelict" 1960

JOHNNY RINGO was a western series that ran for 38 episodes during 1959-60. The series starred Don Durant as the title character with Karen Sharpe, Mark Goddard and Terence De Marney as series regulars. The series follows Durant, (Ringo) a former gunfighter who decides to go straight. He becomes the Sheriff in the small town of Velardi in the Arizona Territory. The series was one of several (Rifleman, Wanted Dead or Alive, Shotgun Slade etc) with a "gimmick gun". Durant carries a special LeMat revolver equipped with a shotgun barrel under the six gun barrel.

This episode is the 33rd episode of the series.

Poor dirt farmer Martin Landau is getting dressed up for a visit to the Velardi town bank. He needs to float a loan because of a drought which destroyed his crops. His wife, Enid Jaynes, is pregnant and ready to pop any day now.

The visit with the bank manager, John Anderson, does not go well. Anderson, a real hard case, tells Landau that he is not a good risk for a loan. Landau loses it when Anderson tosses him a few coins and says good day. Punches are thrown and Anderson goes for a gun he keeps in his desk. Landau grabs up a weapon from a man standing nearby. Landau gets off a shot wounding Anderson in the shoulder.

Sheriff Durant and his Deputy, Mark Goddard, are soon on site grabbing Landau before he can finish Anderson. Landau says he was only defending himself. Anderson however swears out a statement against Landau. Durant locks Landau up in the cells. The man tells Durant about his wife and her condition. Sheriff Durant sends Goddard out to the farm to check on Jaynes.

Goddard finds the woman in pain and rides back to town for the doctor. Durant decides to release Landau on his word to return so he can be with his wife. Anderson, still mad as a hornet, sees this and demands that the town council fire Durant. The council rides out to have a word with Durant at Landau's farm.

The woman, Jaynes gives birth to a bouncing little boy. She however does not survive the birth. The council decides to ignore Anderson's ranting and tell him to drop the charges against Landau. They then float a loan to Landau to help him and his new boy out.

While not a rip-snorter of an episode, it is always interesting to see Martin Landau in anything.
