During his talk show Godfrey refers to a a book called "The Innocent Seduced" by a "Dr. Frederic". This is a reference to Seduction of the Innocent, an influential book written in the 1950s by Fredric Wertham which accused comic books of corrupting minors.
Mophir was voiced by Tracey Walter, who previously portrayed The Joker's right hand man "Bob" in Batman (1989).
General McCormick's "villain" costume is modeled on that of Eclipso, a villain of the "Eclipsed" storyline from the comics, an enemy of the comics' Mophir. Also, while the main villains (the evil spirits that possess people) are never referred by name, they are also based on Eclipso.
The character Glorious Gordon Godfrey is based in part on Glorious Godfrey in DC Comics. Glorious Godfrey was a minion of Darkseid from the world of Apokolips. Godfrey's specialty was persuasion and manipulation and Darkseid used him to sway individuals to Darkseid's cause. The design for both characters is similar.
