- Leslie Thurston: You're a lawyer, you said?
- Paul Bryan: Was. I'm retired.
- Leslie Thurston: I think that's quite intelligent of you.
- Paul Bryan: [voiceover] So the Puritan in me is risen. And instead of chasing after pleasure, I've decided to salvage the hidden woman in Leslie Thurston. She's a fine human being, but she's headed nowhere. And I'm,,, headed nowhere.
- Paul Bryan: Leslie, I'll be dead in a year or two. Two years on the outside. Guaranteed by three of the highest-priced specialists in the United States. I have one of those afflictions they name after the poor fellow who discovered it.
- Chauffeur: [in response to Paul's poor attempt to speak French] If I were you, I would only resort to French in the most dire of emergencies.
- Paul Bryan: [leaving the funeral of an ill-fated diver] You know she intends to go right on with this diving?
- Robert Thurston: I assumed she would.
- Paul Bryan: If I were her father, I'd put a stop to it.
- Robert Thurston: If you were her father, you'd have an entirely different expression on your face when you look at her, or at least I certainly hope you would.
- Paul Bryan: I'm not joking. This so-called sport is dangerous!
- Robert Thurston: Life is dangerous. My daughter likes to live it fully, bravely, proudly. The trick is to live and not just survive.
- Paul Bryan: Nietzsche?
- Robert Thurston: No, Beatles, I think. Maybe Ringo?
- Paul Bryan: As a matter of fact, isn't it the danger that you like?
- Leslie Thurston: I don't know. Maybe. Wasn't it Nietzsche whose schtick was living the full life? And he put his message in just two words: Live dangerously.
- Paul Bryan: Must read Nietzsche someday.
- Leslie Thurston: You should. He died quite mad, you know?
- Leslie Thurston: Remember, Daddy, "live dangerously"?
- Robert Thurston: Naturally.
- Leslie Thurston: Well, Paul pointed something out to me. Perhaps Nietzsche meant emotionally, and not just risking your neck day after day.
- Robert Thurston: But going back to Philadelphia to live, that's emotional suicide.
- Leslie Thurston: I'm going to find myself a man, now that I know they exist. And I'm going to love. That's living dangerously. That's risk. That was the one risk I was always afraid to take. Now I can't wait to take it.
- Robert Thurston: Why don't you do yourself a favor: Don't try to beat little Leslie. You'll live longer that way.
- Paul Bryan: You mean 'survive' longer? And I'm not going to try to beat her; I'm going to beat her, as a favor to her and on behalf of the whole male sex!
