Caine meets the elderly Ancient Warrior (Chief Dan George), and accompanies him to the town of Purgatory, where he wants to die. Judge Emmitt Marcus (Will Geer) confirms that Ancient Warrior has a legal right to the entire valley, but the corrupt sheriff, Aldon Pool (Victor French, CARTER COUNTRY and HIGHWAY TO HEAVEN), holds all Indians in contempt, especially since a massacre 8 years earlier resulted in the deaths of 14 white townspeople. Also opposing the sheriff is the vengeful Lucas Bass (G.D.Spradlin), a legendary gunfighter whose Comanche son was lynched in Purgatory the year before. Denver Pyle plays the town mayor, and among the younger ruffians who delight in the mocking of Indians are Gary Busey and William Katt (son of Bill Williams and Barbara Hale, credited in his early days as Bill Katt). This was the last episode from the first season, and another dealing with bigotry in the Old West.
