Emmett Kerry approaches Gramps Miller about selling his farm to a wealthy man who wants a large spread for his cattle breeding operation. He leaves his son Edgar with Jeff in the barn. Edgar is interested in riding their yearling Daimond, but Jeff insists he is too young and not saddle broken. When Edgar tries to approach Diamond with a saddle, he is nudged over by the horse. He picks up a stick to beat the horse, but Jeff steps in and starts to wrestle him for control of the stick. Jeff's mother Ellen catches them fighting and sends Jeff into the house. When she follows him, Edgar is left alone in the barn. He again tries to saddle Diamond, once more ending up being nudged over. He picks up the same stick to hit the horse. This time Lassie is there to keep him away. In fighting to get the stick back, Edgar falls and injures his leg on a roll off barbed wire. He yelps in pain. As Gramps and Emmett show up, Emmett asks if Lassie bit him. This gives Edgar a convenient excuse for his injury, so he says yes. Emmett storms off swearing to have Lassie tried as a vicious dog. Proceedings at the trial are looking grim until Caleb Brown, the Millers' lawyer, uncovers the bite marks. Jeff instantly sees that the marks are too far apart to be from Lassie's teeth. He tosses the judge's gavel for Lassie to catch. The tooth marks on the handle prove his point. Case dismissed.
