- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: [referring to abortions] When you were still performing them, would Mr. Seeley have been justified in killing you?
- Dr. Rachel Moran: [upset] Yes. I was, in effect, committing murder.
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: [puzzled] In effect?
- Dr. Rachel Moran: I was committing murder.
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: All right. Would you please stand up?
- [to the bailiff]
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: Officer, arrest this woman!
- Judge Daniel Scarletti: Mr. McCoy!
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: We've just heard a confession of murder, Your Honour. Officer!
- Judge Daniel Scarletti: I'm not amused, Mr. McCoy!
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: How many counts of murder shall we charge you with, Dr Moran?
- Judge Daniel Scarletti: [angry] Mr. McCoy! May I remind you that abortion is legal!
- Executive A.D.A. Jack McCoy: [triumphantly] Thank you, Your Honour!
- Drew Seely: [referring to McCoy] He's badgering me, your Honor.
- Judge Daniel Scarletti: I can instruct them to lower the temperature, but you still have to answer the question!
- Detective Mike Logan: [pouring coffee] Well, they make a lot of noise on the sidewalk to try to convince the women going in to change their minds.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Then they refer them to a pro-life pregnancy crisis center.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: [scoffs] Pro-life? You ever notice how some people's concern for life stops at birth? They want those babies to come out, after that, they don't give a damn what happens to them.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Well, they seem to give a damn about what happened to Dr Reed, their official policy is anti-murder.
- Detective Mike Logan: Apparently when the doctor was across town getting shot, Bryant and his people were waiting for her at the clinic.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: All of his people?
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Hey, they claimed they didn't even know her name.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: Mm. Whoever shot her knew her name, her address and her office hours.
- Detective Mike Logan: Uh, the clinic kept that information secret.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: Her private patients knew where to find her.
- Detective Mike Logan: You see, Miss Gunther, you being such a pro-life activist and all, we're wondering why you showed up at a clinic asking about ending your pregnancy.
- Nancy Gunther: I never said I wanted to do that.
- Detective Mike Logan: You never said your real name, either.
- Nancy Gunther: [smiling] A lot of people give false names, it's very personal.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Mm-hmm: you gave a false name but you picked up a real one: Eileen Reed. The only people they tell the doctor's names to are the patients.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Yeah, you called and made an appointment with her but you never showed up.
- Nancy Gunther: I changed my mind. I'm keeping my baby.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: [disbelieving] You were always gonna keep it, weren't you? You asked for the last appointment of the day so you'd know exactly when she was leaving the office.
- [leans forward]
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Who'd you tell, Nancy?
- Detective Mike Logan: [firm] If you told the shooter, that's conspiracy to murder.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Better help us out, Nancy or you're gonna be raising your baby in a cell block at Bedford Hills.
- Nancy Gunther: [unruffled] If that's God's will.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: She's got nothing to say, she asked for a lawyer.
- Detective Mike Logan: Hey, let's arrest her for murder, that might motivate her.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: It's not enough to hold her, her lawyer will say the missed appointment's a coincidence.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: [computer beeps] Oh, how's this for a coincidence? That protest in Schenectady where she was arrested, 27 people were taken in, including her and Harold Malcolm.
- Detective Mike Logan: [surprised] What, the guy who shot the doctor in Buffalo?
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Yeah, two months later. Protest was led by a Drew Seeley of Manhattan.
- [smiles]
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Oh, boy, this one's a real nut, defrocked priest, listen to this. The diocese of Schenectady has a restraining order on this guy, he can't come within a hundred yards of any of their churches.
- Lieutenant Anita Van Buren: Well, maybe he'll think confession is still good for the soul.
- Mark Bryant: [to passersby at the abortion clinic] If your wives are in there, drag them out!
- [sees Mike and Lennie and takes pictures]
- Mark Bryant: Hey, you men! Protect your children.
- Detective Mike Logan: [blocking the camera] We're the police, Mr Bryant.
- Mark Bryant: Good. They're committing murder in there, do your duty.
- Detective Mike Logan: Yeah, well, we're investigating the murder of Dr Eileen Reed.
- Mark Bryant: [surprised] And you're looking at us?
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: [sarcastic] Your people aren't exactly handing out bouquets to these doctors.
- Mark Bryant: Listen, yesterday I had twice as many rescuers here. Every time anyone fires a shot in our name, it smears us and reduces our numbers.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Sure, no one wants to get in the way of a stray bullet.
- Mark Bryant: [firm] Nobody wants to be associated with killing, we're here to prevent killing.
- [points to the clinic]
- Mark Bryant: Do you know what's going on in there?
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: [losing patience] Hey, what's going on in there is legal. We've got a dead 35 year old woman on our hands.
- Mark Bryant: [sincerely] And we mourn her: violence begets violence, we want it all to stop.
- Detective Mike Logan: [prevents Bryant from leaving the scene] Hey Bryant, how's your hobby? Get any good pictures of Dr Reed?
- Mark Bryant: Several, but I didn't know her name until I saw it on the news.
- Drew Seely: Oh, yes, I know Nancy, she's a fine Christian woman.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: And you know Harold Malcolm too?
- Drew Seely: [smiling] I've prayed with him often.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: You know, the reason we're here is that some of your people have been doing un-Christian things.
- Drew Seely: [surprised] What do you mean?
- Detective Mike Logan: Well, Malcolm blasted a doctor with a shotgun in Buffalo. We think Nancy Gunther might be involved in the murder of a doctor in Manhattan.
- Drew Seely: Ah yes, the abortion doctors. Four dead.
- [smiles]
- Drew Seely: Isn't that wonderful?
- [Mike and Lennie look on stunned]
- Drew Seely: Come in, come in.
- Drew Seely: Those doctors were committing a holocaust.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: And your solution is murder? Whatever happened to 'turning the other cheek', 'loving thine enemy'?
- Drew Seely: Ah, I will love my enemy but a child in the womb doesn't have that opportunity. Please.
- [gestures for Lennie and Mike to sit]
- Drew Seely: The Bible commands us, it commands us to protect the weak and the powerless.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: [dryly] Well, the State of New York commands us not to kill, I think that's also mentioned in the Bible someplace.
- Drew Seely: My only goal here is saving lives.
- Detective Mike Logan: Do you tell your followers to shoot doctors?
- Drew Seely: They draw their own conclusions, they don't need me.
- Detective Mike Logan: Do you happen to know who drew a conclusion to shoot Dr Reed?
- Drew Seely: [firmly] No, I don't.
- Detective Mike Logan: Or who talked to Nancy Gunther lately?
- Drew Seely: [drinking coffee] Nancy. Nancy gathered some information on Dr Reed for me. I wanted the doctor's name and address to try to persuade her to stop.
- Detective Mike Logan: Persuade her how?
- Drew Seely: Well, I tried to call her and I sent her some literature.
- Detective Mike Logan: [angry] A "Wanted" poster?
- Drew Seely: Yes, that was mine.
- Detective Mike Logan: So you think that calling her a criminal was going to persuade her?
- Drew Seely: Well, nothing else had.
- Detective Lennie Briscoe: Uh, where were you around noon on Tuesday?
- Drew Seely: Ah, well, I was at a conference of the Council On Choice.
- [smiles]
