Walter Shannon (John Dehner) runs the town of Shannonville. His family built it and as far as Walter is concerned. He owns all of it.

Stan Jakowsky along with other farmers has a claim to the land. It was promised to him but Walter will not stand for such nonsense.

He has lackeys such as Tracey (Lee Van Cleef) who puts down trouble Pretty soon Stan Jakowsky is shot dead by Tracey. The local doctor tells Deputy Marshal Sam Buckhart that the official cause of death is suicide.

The people of Shannonville are afraid of Walter Shannon and no one will stand up against him.

Buckhart is determined to take in Tracey and get him to stand trial in Santa Fe. It is going to be a battle of nerves.

It's the hoary old western trope of standing against the town bully. The one with the power, money and hired guns. Good performances from Dehner and Lee Van Cleef.

Warning: Spoilers
Need I say more? I haven't seen something LVC has done that I DON'T like yet! He is one heck of a character actor! He plays an excellent bad guy! When I saw he was in this episode, I knew I would like it and I did. His character show Stan Jakovsky down as only LVC could do it! This episode deserves a ten just by him being in it.

The story was also great, though not too original. I wonder how many towns were actually like that - run by a single man who seemed to have everyone under his control. Actually, it seems this wasn't the first episode of Law of the Plainsman that had this issue, am I right?

John Dehner is another character actor who plays a great bad guy. He has a soft, calm voice that makes him so powerful. I like anything he does as well. Oh, to go back to the good ol' days when television was worth watching! I'm so glad for DVD's!
