Yawkey (played by Ray Danton), who was well known as a fast gun, arrives in town. He issues a challenge to Marshal Troop for a gun battle at 3:30 p.m., and then refuses to talk to anyone as he drinks a whole bottle of whiskey.
I never liked Ray Danton much, because he usually played arrogant criminals, and jerks. Amazingly, he was married to the gorgeous Julie Adams for 23 years, from 1955-1978. Now I envy him too.
So Yawkey sits at the Birdcage Saloon drinking all day, while Troop, Johnny, and Lily are all running around town trying to figure out what to do. It really showed Troop as a bit weak, in spite of his claim that he was just going to do his job.
At the end, we get about three minutes of non-stop pity jabbering from a dying character who was tired of gun-fights. I get that they were aiming for an anti-climactic ending, but it was lame.
Even more lame is that Dan Troop then carries the guy all over town, and puts him into the Marshal's Office like it was a shrine. He tells Johnny, "Nobody touches him, nobody looks at him." What?? I mean, did they have a gun-fight or was it Love Potion #9??
In some episodes after Dan Troop kills somebody he lashes out at anyone that congratulates him, or that offers him a drink. I get the point that he did not enjoy killing people, but he seems to enjoy being a major jerk and all-around kill-joy. Troop's character was often wound way too tight even for the 1950s.
