- Ward and June find that keeping old friend Andy Hadlock's "trouble" a secret from the boys was not the best way to handle the problem and the whole family learns an important lesson about alcoholism after Beaver unwittingly causes handyman Andy to fall off the wagon...and a ladder!—shepherd1138
- Andy is an old acquaintance of Ward's who is seeking work as a handyman. Ward - knowing that Andy is an alcoholic and struggling to stay sober - agrees to give him a chance and assigns him to paint the trim. June has to be reassured that Andy will pose no problems or pose a bad influence to Wally or Beaver. Things go fine at first, but one afternoon while Beaver is home alone, Andy comes in complaining of shakiness. He asks Beaver to get him a drink; at first, Beaver gives him water, but Andy was thinking of something more and asks Beaver to go to his father's alcohol chest to get him whatever he can find. Beaver finds Ward's bottle of brandy and innocently serves it to Andy. Later that afternoon, Ward arrives home and finds Andy drunk; he is forced to take him home. Later, Ward tells June (and later, Wally) about the situation, and instructs both not to talk about it to Beaver, since he might not understand what's going on. But Beaver gets the truth out of Wally and the topic comes up at supper. Beaver admits he served Andy the alcohol. Ward is initially upset but then realizes that both he and June have a duty to tell their sons things that aren't always pleasant, and that such things best come from them. The next day, a sober Andy comes by the house, agrees that he has a problem and vows to change.—Brian Rathjen <briguy_52732@yahoo.com>
- Andy Hadlock, an old acquaintance of the Cleavers, stops by their house. June is suspect of his visit as she and Ward know he's an alcoholic, which they refuse to disclose to Wally and Beaver, they only referring to it as Andy's "troubles" to the boys. Andy begs for work, specifically painting the trim on their house. As Andy vows that he's been sober for six months, Ward decides to give him a chance. When Beaver mentions to Andy that his parents have been talking about his troubles, Andy, who was lying about his sobriety, decides to make a go of this time by pouring out his bottle of whiskey and throwing the bottle in the bushes. However, Ward later finds Andy drunk on the job. What he and June don't know is that Beaver was the one who provided him with the drink when Andy asked him for it to calm his shakes. When Ward and June find out, will Beaver get into trouble for doing something he didn't know was wrong seeing as he didn't know what Andy's troubles are?—Huggo
