Father Knows Best
ccthemovieman-12 December 2006
Beaver receives a family heirloom - or "hairloom," as he puts it - an expensive 14-carat gold ring from his Aunth Martha. Beaver thinks it's neat and wants to take it to school to show everyone but his parents nix that idea, saying he would just lose it and upset his aunt.

Of course, being Beaver, he can't resist so to rationalize his actions he ties the ring to some string and the string to his belt loop. This was he wasn't wearing it, as promised. Well, at school - the worst kid in the class, "Judy" (the tattletale and obnoxious student) claims the ring really isn't it and to prove it, Beaver should put it on to see if it fits. Beaver does just that but on problem ensues: he can't get the ring off!

What happens, how it ever comes off, and the lessons learned here all ensue. The final 30 seconds is the best where Ward proves what a super father he really was.

My son learned a lesson, we know Beaver hasn't.

Warning: Spoilers
Beaver has received a gift from Aunt Martha, a family heirloom. In this case it's a ring that belonged to Martha's brother Theodore. June says Beaver can't wear the ring to school because he might lose it. Our question is how long will it take Beaver to lose it.

Next morning Beaver is off to school with the ring in his pocket. Beaver figures he is safe because mom said don't wear it to school. She didn't say anything about carrying it. On Beaver's way out the door, Ward notices the string but doesn't pursue its purpose enough.

At school Beaver is showing everyone the ring. Judy says it isn't Beaver's ring because he's not wearing it. Beaver puts the ring on and then makes a discovery, he can't get it off.

During class, Miss Landers discovers the ring on Beaver's finger as he is trying to chew it off. Miss Landers takes Beaver to the nurse's office where the nurse tries to get it off but isn't having success. She decides she should call Beaver's mother. June gets the call and isn't happy to discover the problem. She has to go to school to pick Beaver up, but she has to take a cab as Ward has the car. The nurse figures the only way to get the ring off is to cut it off, and the school doctor is bringing the necessary tools.

While waiting for the doctor to arrive, Beaver is sent to sit outside the nurse's office to sit with Wally. Wally explains the ring is being cut off and not Beaver's finger. When Beaver gets home, Ward is not happy as the ring is mutilated and an heirloom destroyed. Ward decides Beaver has to write a letter to Aunt Martha and explain what he did. June as usual is poor Beaver. As Aunt Martha is June's relative one would think June would be more upset than Ward, but she isn't.

Beaver writes his letter but after he writes it he reads it aloud to Ward. After hearing it, Ward rips it up. Ward says writing the letter was punishment enough.

Could this happen? Oh, yes. My son had been behaving oddly, more oddly then usual when he presented us a typewritten note. He had tried my grandfather's ring on and couldn't get it off, and he understood if we never spoke to him again. When we saw the swollen finger, a hasty trip to the ER was organized where the ring was cut off. The ring couldn't be repaired but we still have our son, and the note he no doubt painfully typed one handed.

LOOK WHAT I HAVE ON MY FINGER!
tcchelsey14 December 2023
Ed James wrote this episode, and you know it would be an adventure. James was the creator of FATHER KNOWS BEST.

Beave's in trouble. He receives a gold ring, a family heirloom, which originally belonged to his great Uncle Theodore! Ward and June tell him, NO, don't wear it -- so Beaver wears it to school and guess what happens.

James probably was inspired by a real life incident, as how many of us have tried on rings and similar stuff, only to have them get stuck. Beave also gets more "interesting" news when he thinks the school nurse may have to cut off his finger! The ultimate frightmare.

As usual, Jerry Mathers steals the show, and you actually find yourself feeling sorry for him. It's the Murphy's Law of growing up and, especially, look but DON'T touch. A rule none of us kids obeyed.

Sue Randall returns as Beave's teacher, who at the time was --believe it or not -- also appearing in cop shows at Warner Brothers/ABC TV. She had some great dramatic parts.

Watch this for the memories.

SEASON 2 remastered Universal dvd box set. Check out the classic box cover.

Kid's always push boundaries, the boundaries usually push back

Beaver receives a family heirloom - a ring belonging to his uncle Theodore - from June's aunt Martha. It is 14 karat gold, and so Beaver is impressed. However, he is instructed not to wear it to school but only on special occasions. I assume Ward and June will tell him when these special occasions occur.

But Beaver wants to show, not tell, the kids at school about the ring, so he becomes a 3rd grade lawyer. His parents said he could not wear the ring, so if he takes the ring to school and doesn't wear it, then there should be no problem. Right? Certainly not!

Wally has some good lines this week. When June needs to go to the elementary school and needs Wally to call a taxi, he asks if they can pick up Eddie Haskell on the way because he would sure like to see what's going on. June answers with a look of great disdain.

The highlight here is how Ward handles Beaver's transgression with the wisdom of Solomon, although he's for sure heated about how Beaver tried to skirt the rules.

14 Karats Of Trouble For Beaver Cleaver
StrictlyConfidential30 October 2020
(*Wally to June quote*) - Well, gee, mom, I couldn't squeal on my own brother!"

My-oh-my! What a nice surprise for Beaver. His Aunt Martha (aka. "The Umbrella Aunt") has sent him a gold ring (which is a family heirloom) in the mail and it is now his to wear.

As expected, Beaver's parents sternly warn him not to wear this precious ring to school. It's only meant to be worn on special occasions.

But, Beaver just can't resist showing it off to his fellow classmates. And when he does, this is when the troubles start.

Anyway - Considering all of the problems that arise over this ring, it's nice to know that this episode actually does end on a happy note.
