The title refers to the 1929 barbershop song "Wedding Bells Are Breaking Up (That Old Gang Of Mine)" composed by Sammy Fain with lyrics by Irving Kahal and Willie Raskin.
The Daily Planet was founded in 1934.
Superman apprehends John Dillinger outside a cinema where he has just seen Manhattan Melodrama (1934). In reality, Dillinger attended a showing of the film in the Biograph Theater in Chicago on July 22, 1934. After leaving the cinema, he was shot to death by federal agents. Coincidentally, the ending of Manhattan Melodrama (1934) involves the death of the famous gangster Edward J. "Blackie" Gallagher (Clark Gable).
John Pleshette (Dr. Emil Hamilton) and William Devane (Al Capone) were both regular cast members on Knots Landing (1979), though not at the same time: Pleshette played Richard Avery from 1979 to 1983 while Devane played Greg Sumner from 1983 to 1993. Their characters were the first and second husbands of Laura Avery Sumner (Constance McCashin) respectively. Furthermore, Joseph Gian (Clyde Barrow) played the recurring character Detective Tom Ryan on the series while this episode's director Lorraine Senna was one of the regular directors of Knots Landing (1979) from 1982 to 1992. David Jacobs, the executive producer of Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993), was the creator of Knots Landing (1979).
Although not the conventional way of saying it, William Devane's pronunciation of Al Capone's name is accurate.
