If Your Name's Joan -- Watch Out for Lucy!
kgraovac6 November 2023
Lucy in California Episode #4: We've already met neighbors Mary Jane and Tink and this one introduces us to handsome airline pilot Brad Collins and chatty movie extra Joan Brenner.

Lucy and Joan hit it off and Joan offers her two tickets to the Screen Arts Charity Ball. When Lucy says she doesn't have a date, Joan schemes to get Bill to accompany the redhead to the event.

This episode -and the one that followed it -- is more interesting for the infamous backstage drama rather than the content itself. Blondell was considered as a replacement for Vivian but the animosity shared between her and Lucy quickly nixed that. Which makes lines like "We're gonna get along great" so amusing in retrospect.

Keith Andes had appeared twice in the Danfield episodes as boyfriend Bill King. They should have just had him follow her to L. A. They had Mr. Mooney transplanted to the Coast, so why not?? Logic was never this series' strong suit.

Lucy makes a remark about feeling like "a B-Girl in a laundry room" - a cute wink to her movie starlet days. She also does a Tarzan rope swing in the final scene that also features her and the middle-age extras all doing the Twist.
