Perhaps if I were a baseball fan, I would like this one better. Or maybe baseball just doesn't make for great comedy. I didn't like the Bob Hope baseball episode of I LOVE LUCY either. The big block scene here involves a batting cage, but all Lucy can really do is swing endlessly and miss, then later stand there and be pelted when her sweater gets caught. Not funny.
They had a good cast for this one so it's too bad the script didn't serve them well. William Schallert (he probably filmed this just before starting THE PATTY DUKE SHOW), Karen Norris, Mary Wickes and Mary Jane Croft (the latter at her cattiest in this one) are all on board, but nothing really stands out (except Mary Jane oddly looks way older here than she would a decade later on HERE'S LUCY).
Candy Moore dubs one of her lines in the middle of the episode. She adds a word at the beginning but it's very noticeable.
I guess Lucy's poufy '60s wig could not accommodate a baseball cap so for the final scene at the ballpark she wears her natural hair. It makes her look more like Lucy Ricardo than perhaps any other episode of The Lucy Show. The scene kind of plays more like I LOVE LUCY as well, ending with her catching the baseball by opening the front of her way-too-oversized uniform pants.
