Back When Clip Shows Were Still a Novelty
kgraovac22 November 2023
Lucy is in traction with a broken leg and Mr. Mooney has arranged for a nurse to care for her. It turns out to be Viv, who has flown in to play Florence Nightingale. She and Lucy look back on some of their wackiest escapades together.

With so much Classic TV at our disposal in 2023, it's easy to take this episode for granted, but back in 1968 it was a big deal to see a "best-of" collection, since the series had not yet even gone into daytime reruns.

There is no studio audience for the wraparound scenes, and Lucy and Viv's girl talk comes off as very static. There's not really any humor either in their dialog, so this one's just worth viewing if you don't want to invest in the full episodes.

We see clips of Lucy the Coin Collector, Lucy and Her Electric Mattress, Lucy and Viv Are Volunteer Firemen, Lucy Puts Up a TV Antenna, Lucy and Viv Put In a Shower, Lucy Buys a Boat. When the clips switch back to the present it is kind of jarring to see Lucy's glamour look versus her more natural hair and makeup in the Season One clips.

This episode was oddly prescient, knowing now that Lucy actually did break her leg for real in 1972 and did the first shows of Season 5 in either a wheelchair or a leg cast.
