My Favorite Episode of the Season

Episode #3 in California and Lucy gets herself a job at the Pop record company as secretary to Barney Miller. No, not Hal Linden - Lou Krugman, who must have studied the Danfield episodes because he bellows an uncanny rendering of Gale Gordon's patented "MMMISSES CARRRRMICHAEL!".

Lucy attends a dress rehearsal of the TV show WING DING - which is sponsored by Pop Records. It spoofs the teen and music culture of the time. The number is catchy and Ms. Ball gets a huge audience reaction when she starts grooving and reciting the Wing Ding lyrics.

Lucy also meets another neighbor in this episode - musician Mel Tinker (Mel Torme) - whom she immediately nicknames "Tink". It's obvious that the set for Tink's place is just Lucy's apartment redressed with Bohemian décor. Lucy's impressed with Tink's new song - it's an old-fashioned easy-listening number - and she decides to act as talent scout.

Mr. Miller -- still channeling Mooney - dislikes Tink's song and tells them the kids want tragic rock and roll ballads: "You gotta make 'em miserable to make 'em happy", so Lucy devises a plan. When a last-minute replacement is needed for the Wing Ding show, Lucy and Tink debut their new rock-and-roll tearjerker on TV.

"Lucy In the Music World" is definitely one of those episodes to put in a 1960s time capsule to get a feel for the era. The musical "Wing Ding" sequence is so wonderfully campy and fun that when it is reprised later in the show the viewer is delighted to see it, rather than annoyed that it could possibly have been used as filler to pad the running time.

This is my favorite episode of the season and one of my favorites of the whole series. I realize it's not a very funny episode but what it lacks in humor it makes up for with its endearing Sixties kitsch. I just wish Lucy and Tink's number had not had the tempo change. The rousing middle section really captures the twangy rock and roll sound of 1965.

Lucy comes off as very sharp and crafty in this episode versus dumb, which always makes her character more appealing.

If you want to REALLY have a Wing Ding, watch this episode along with BEWITCHED's "Hippie Hippie Hooray", PETTICOAT JUNCTION's "The Ladybugs" and GILLIGAN'S ISLAND's "Don't Bug the Mosquitos" and enjoy a gooey, retro buzz.
