The Old Hand-Behind-the-Curtain Trick
kgraovac25 October 2023
Audrey Simmons (Mary Jane Croft) has set Lucy up on a blind date with a doctor (Frank Aletter), and they meet at the local record store where Lucy has gone to buy the new Bobby Darin album for Chris. It doesn't resemble any record store I ever knew, but there is a fun bit with Lucy and the female clerk that is very corny but gives the episode a very 1962 feel.

It seems Frank isn't big on current pop music and prefers Classical. So, back home Lucy dusts off her old violin (at least the plot didn't allow her a saxophone in this one) and delivers a wretched version of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". Vivian Vance winces and demonstrates her way with a line and brings yuks from a simple "Good GRIEF!". There's also a great line when Viv reminds Lucy that her idea of a Classic is Elvis' "Hound Dog" - which was a hit only six years prior! It's amazing how hit songs became "Golden Oldies" in such a short time frame back in the day.

When Frank shows up for their date, Lucy has decorated the living room with ceramic busts of Classical composers and has the kids show off to prove how cultured they are. Jerry gets off a zinger while wearing a Beethoven sweatshirt, Ralph Hart gets to show off his dancing skills and Viv deadpans a real corker about ballet lessons.

Lucy gets jealous when Frank and Viv duet at the piano, and there's a funny part where Viv gets bumped off the bench by Lucy, just before Lucy slams the lid on his fingers. This leads to the old hand-behind-the-curtain bit during a recital. It was done better before and after, so the final scene is kind of underwhelming.

Lucy wears the poufy wig in this one and looks very glamorous throughout. She seems to alternate between her real hair and the wigs in Season 1.
