Stars an inconvenience

If there was one thing that was a constant in I Love Lucy it was Lucy's never ending maniacal quest for celebrities. On contact with one something hilariously awful happened to the celebrity like William Holden getting a pie in the face at the Brown Derby etc. But in this Lucy/Desi Comedy hour episode the arrival of celebrity couple Howard Duff and Ida Lupino is just an inconvenience.

So when the Ricardos get a chance to rent a lodge in Vermont on a lake, she sees it as alone time for a bit with Ricky. The problem was that the guy who rented it to Ricky also rented it to Howard Duff and Ida Lupino. For the only time in history Lucille Ball was not happy that a celebrity couple was in close proximity.

As for romance all the men do is fish all day and play gin rummy all night. And Ida and Lucy clean the fish they catch. What to do but ruin their fishing.

Ida Lupino who never really was acclaimed for playing comedy on the big screen turns her intensity to comedy here and she makes a great companion in madcap schemes with Lucille Ball. Funniest scene is the climax when all four are in a leaky row boat which has drilled the leaks into and trying to patch it with chewing gum. Second funniest is the two women trying to vamp their husbands into kanoodling and them being singularly annoyed at being distracted from gin rummy.

Nice episode with some nice comedy from Ida Lupino.
