A solid episode!
mm-398 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Italian Ice has it all. A mystery, a rescue and Magnum stuck in the middle. One of the best directed Magnum, which has the viewers guessing. The mob form Sicily come to town. Magnum and Rick have few smooth cons. Then Magnum's fines out about been conned too. There is a love interest which entangles the mystery which makes a shocking conclusion. Well acted and directed Italian Ice is 9 stars. In the top five of my favorite episode.

Super Magnum

Warning: Spoilers
This was an excellent episode, probably my favourite so far. It starts off with Magnum "extracting" a young girl from the Sicilian mafia by employing some all-out marine/James Bond techniques, which I'm not sure I've seen so far in the series. When he gets back home, we find out that he has a steady girlfriend of about two weeks, which makes the episode quite a bit different from those that have come before.

Bad news, though. Those pesky Sicilians have followed Magnum back to Hawaii. And the sweet girl turns out not to be quite so sweet after all. (It's never stated, but my impression all along was that she was a wild child who'd been with the Marquis of her own free will, at least until he started locking her up for being too out of control.)

Something I found surprising is that Anne Dusenberry, who plays the very young-looking Katrina, is actually about two and half years older than Mimi Rogers, the more mature-looking Margo. Nice bit of casting. Both ladies are great here.

Magnum and Italy
safenoe4 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Ann Dusenberry guest stars as Katrina Tremaine, and quite seriously Ann kind of resembles Shelley Long and also Sharon Stone, and I wondered about the resemblance of Katrina Tremaine with Catherine Trammell who Sharon Stone played in Basic Instinct over a decade later after this episode debuted.

Mimi Rogers, a few years before she married Tom Cruise, plays Margo Perina. The scene at the end was quite moving and tense because the audience of acting students wasn't sure if it was real or not with the confrontation. I'm enjoying watching Magnum, P. I. for daytime TV, along with the early seasons of Father Brown.

Burly private investigator/Vietnam vet Thomas Magnum (Tom Selleck) is sent on a daring commando raid by his sometime client/landlord Robin Masters to rescue Katrina Tremaine (Ann Dusenberry) from the elegant Sicilian villa of a highly dangerous playboy marquis/mafioso (Jean Claudio).

How Katrina - daughter of a dear friend of Robin's, found herself in the clutches of a low-level nobleman with mafia ties is never properly explained. It seems like the plot was gleaned from a cheap paperback romance novel but it is depicted nicely.

Swiftly but with considerable difficulty and threat to life and limb Magnum extracts the lovely and quirky socialite from her captivity and brings her to Robin Masters luxurious Hawaiian estate via Masters' private jet.

Plagued by jet-lag and drained by the high adrenaline raid Magnum sleeps it off in the guest-house flat on the estate. He is thus ill-equipped to deal with Margo Perina (Mimi Rogers) - his neglected girlfriend who wants to know why he stood her up.

Determined to set things right with Margo, Magnum is distracted from an impending menace. It turns out that the mafioso and his goons have regrouped and traveled to the island. Katrina is almost certainly in danger as is Magnum. But an entirely unforeseen complication makes the situation dangerous for others in proximity too.

Not a bad episode in the series. We still don't get a detailed enough explanation of why Magnum gets to mooch off Robin the way he does. But we see him do something that substantially justifies at least some of it.

Ann Dusenberry should have had a more successful career in Hollywood. A versatile actress, we see examples of the seamless transitions she could pull off in delivering a multi-layered performance. For whatever reason she never quite got that big break that would have made all the difference.

Mimi Rogers, appearing here in one of her first screen roles, of course did get those big breaks and was a motion picture leading lady within five years of this episode's airing.

Dallas Cowboys offensive tackle Mark Tuinei has a cameo.

Magnum tangles with the Italian Mob in a magnificent episode
DVD_Connoisseur3 November 2018
"Italian Ice" is just wonderful entertainment. Beginning with Magnum's nighttime raid on a secluded Sicilian villa, this episode barely stops for breath.

This week's love interest is none other than the very talented Mimi Rogers. She's excellent as Tom's somewhat sceptical girlfriend.

Lenny ("The Godfather") Montana plays the Sicilian Marquis' muscle and Ann Dusenberry co-stars as the rescued friend of Robin. Is there more to this young lady than initially meets the eye?

Unpredictable, action packed and extremely funny, this is a 10 star episode.

Revenge Italiano

For all of the stereotypical mob actors herein (they're just so uniquely apish) and fourth-wall-breaking, 'Italian Ice' is kinda sad. Magnum rescues a young girl from some bad Sicilians only to have to fend off her confused advances. She takes her puppy love way too far, even pulling a gun on his girlfriend (Mimi Rogers). She's young, pretty and has a sort of purity about her, so her rejection at the end of this sordid affair is tragic.

T.C. does have some funny lines (not to mention some of his own looks to the audience) and it's kinda cool to see Magnum go all silent commando in the opening moments. And I did like Mimi Rogers, so it's a shame she's only a one-off.
