A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH – "The Locket" – 1965 This is episode ten of the thirty-four episode run of the 1965-66 western series, A MAN CALLED SHENANDOAH. Robert Horton stars as an amnesia victim. He travels throughout the American south-west looking for clues to his identity.
Horton stops at an out in the middle of nowhere, general store-bar-stable. He holds up a silver locket and asks the bar-keep if he has ever seen it before. The man, Trevor Bardette, answers that he has. A man passing through a week before had the locket. Horton explains that he found it on a dead man out in the desert.
Bardette says it could not be the same man, because the man, Chris Alcaide, had passed through again two days before. Horton asks which direction and heads off in pursuit.
Not five minutes later, Martin Landau enters the bar. He holds up a wanted poster of Alcaide. Bar-keep Bardette tells Landau that he is the second man looking for Alcaide. He points him in the same direction that Horton took. Landau mounts up and starts trailing Horton.
At the first town Horton hits, he stops at the Sheriff's office to ask about his man. The Sheriff, Mort Mills, throws a fistful of wanted posters at Horton and says, "Help yourself." Horton is soon joined by Landau who we now find out is a bounty hunter.
Landau warns Horton off chasing Alcaide. "I'm not sharing a bounty with anyone!" Horton tells him he can keep the bounty and that he only wants to ask Alcaide some questions. The two agree to ride together as the local Kiowa tribe is out raiding.
This arrangement comes to a quick end when Landau tries to slit Horton's throat during the night. Horton gives the swine a sound beating before leaving with Landau's horse in tow. He tells Landau he will leave the horse up the trail a piece.
The next day, Horton come across a small Kiowa war party that has captured his man Alcaide. The Kiowa also have several cases of rot-gut whiskey with them. They stake their prisoner out and start on the whiskey. That evening, Horton sneaks in and frees Alcaide.
The next morning, Horton figures they have gotten far enough away from the Kiowa. When he starts to question Alcaide, needless to say who puts in an appearance. Landau gets the drop on Horton and has him unbuckle his gun-belt. Alcaide picks that moment to make a break for freedom. This action draws away Landau's attention.
Horton quickly draws his piece and shoots Landau. Landau however, has managed to shoot Alcaide squarely in the back. He expires before he can answer any of Horton's questions about the silver locket. Horton sits on the rocks and opens the locket. Inside is a photo of him and a young girl. But who is she? And who is he. Horton saddles up and continues his search for the answers.
The director was veteran television helmsman, Harry Harris. Harris directed over 300 episodes during a 1960 to 2007 career. He was 82 years old when he did his last episode. DANTE, WANTED: DEAD OR ALIVE, TALES OF WELLS FARGO, THE NAKED CITY, RAWHIDE, GUNSMOKE, LOST IN SPACE, THE HIGH CHAPARRAL, ADAM 12, THE WALTONS and TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL are a few of the series he worked on.
