- Quotes
Laura Harris: [talking about Victor Harris getting killed by an explosion in her car] I don't know, Mr. Mannix. I don't know why anybody would want me dead, but I do know it was my car, so it must've been me they wanted to kill.
Joe Mannix: How did your husband happen to take your car?
Laura Harris: I was rehearsing, and he came by the studio.
Joe Mannix: Rehearsing?
Laura Harris: I was doing a charity show. I belong to "The Helpmates." We do a benefit every year for crippled children. Tom Andros is producing it this year. Anyway, Victor came by about 10:00, and he said, "I'll take your car. Freddy'll drive you home."
Joe Mannix: Freddy?
Laura Harris: The chauffeur. Victor didn't want me driving home alone.
Joe Mannix: Could anyone else have known he was, uh, gonna switch cars?
Laura Harris: Freddy, of course, but beyond that, I couldn't say.
Joe Mannix: Do you have any idea where your husband was going?
Laura Harris: It was, uh... business... in the Valley, I think.
Joe Mannix: Wasn't that sort of unusual? I mean, it was after 10:00 p.m.
Laura Harris: 10:00 was early for Victor.
Joe Mannix: I'd like to talk to your chauffeur, if you don't mind.
Laura Harris: [picks up the phone and presses a button] Hello, Doris. Would you ask Freddy to come in, please? He's probably in the garage. Thank you.
[hangs up]
Joe Mannix: How long has he worked for you?
Laura Harris: Seven or eight years. For Victor, that is. We've been married for about three years.
Joe Mannix: Would you happen to know if your husband had any enemies?
Laura Harris: Mr. Mannix, having enemies goes with being wealthy and self-made.
Joe Mannix: Anyone who'd want to kill him.
Laura Harris: Not that I know of, but it's possible. Victor was very, very competitive. You might even say ruthless in business matters.
Freddy: [knocks on the door and enters] Something I can do for you, Mrs. Harris?
Laura Harris: This is Mr. Mannix, Freddy. He's a private investigator.
Freddy: Mr. Mannix.
Joe Mannix: Do you mind answering a few questions?
Freddy: No, sir.
Joe Mannix: Do you have any idea where Mr. Harris might have been going last night.
Freddy: He didn't say, sir.
Joe Mannix: Well, that's not exactly what I asked. I wanted to know if you had any idea where might have been going?
Freddy: I'm just a chauffeur, sir.
Joe Mannix: Mrs. Harris tells me he was going to keep a business appointment.
Freddy: Yes, I heard him.
Joe Mannix: And she also told me that he might have been going to the Valley. Did he go there regularly?
Freddy: Yes. Fairly often.
- ConnectionsEdited from Mannix: Trap for a Pigeon (1974)
This is a neat story about Hollywood after dark, replete with all the secrets and phonies. It turns out that Laura's husband had quite a few ladies in his life, but he was killed in "her" car. Mannix takes the case, especially since he lives around the corner and digs up a lot of tabloid stuff on lots of plastic people.
Jensen had just finished a co-starring role in the short lived series, BRACKENS WORLD, starring Leslie Neilson. It had a similar dark Hollywood theme, so no surpirse she turned up here.
Popular actress Gail Kobe (as Ginny) is also one of the residents along the Sunset Strip. Kobe later became a successful tv producer for soap operas. Surprise guest is none other than gossip columnist Rona Barrett, playing herself and having a good ole time. This was Rona's second appearance on the show, having appeared in "The Falling Star" back in 1968. Barrett guest starred in a few movies and tv shows in her career, also THE ODD COUPLE following this episode.
A super gag has scowling character actor Stanley Adams playing a chump named Chip (get it?) who loans his car to Joe. Not a good idea with lots of winding roads around town... And as another rewiewer noted, Joe gets paid, but he does owe Chip a new set of wheels, right?
All in all an interesting trip through the Paramount backlot (where MANNIX was filmed) and another appearance of the old BRADY BUNCH living room. Written by John Meredyth Lucas, who probably picked up a few ideas from the local gossip in Hollywood. Why not?
