MONEY FIRST, YOU SECOND, RIGHT?

I would NOT go below 8 stars on this one, and I'll tell you why. Author Laurence Heath was a prolific tv writer, very popular, long with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, later DYNASTY. This was the only episode he wrote for the show as he was everywhere.

True, it's familiar stuff, but worth a look... A wealthy woman (well played by Judi Meredith) is slowly being driven insane. Or is she nuts? Joe is assigned to the case by Wickersham, which also entails him investigating her fiance. Or is he nuts?

Everybody has a little problem here that can be EASILY cured with millions of bucks at stake, ya think? There's the sweet catch. Meredith does a solid job (as Carrie), add some MISSION IMPOSSIBLE type drugged out scenes she's in. Judi originally began her career as an accomplished ice skater, before breaking her back and knee. Never to give up, she turned to acting in the 1950s, appearing in many tv shows and movies, including the Barbara Stanwyck cult shocker THE NIGHT WALKER (1964). Watch for it.

Richard Mulligan, a terrific actor and comedian in his own right, plays the "concerned" psychiatrist. Watch Joe and him go at it. CLASSIC MANNIX. Veteran Herb Voland (as Terraro) is the most familiar face, long on BEWITCHED and as a general in several episodes of MASH. He reminded me of Harold J. Stone to a degree.

Look for MUNSTERS co-star Pat Priest as a secretary. The cast is excellent, including many supporting players. Good direction. Some of the elaborate sets and outside settings here will be used again in future episodes.

Always a late night treat, SEASON 1 EPISODE 8 remastered CBS dvd box set.

Up until the very end, I would have scored this one a 7.

"Beyond the Shadow of a Dream" is a very frustrating episode of "Mannix". That's because it's a pretty good episode and I enjoyed it--but then the ending was SO DUMB that it made me want to toss the DVD into the wall! Yes, it's that stupid.

"Mannix" meets a woman who is having some very vivid and weird dreams. However, those around her seem amazingly blasé about them. Even when Mannix hears a gun go off, they again seem to thing the dreams are nothing. Only later, when he is told that the woman has only been recently released from a mental hospital does it all begin to make sense...or does it?! Not a bad idea for a show. You really aren't sure if the woman is bonkers or not. BUT, at the very end, she and the psychiatrist on the case end up in a long and passionate kiss--what the $%*# was that?! Unprofessional, stupid and...well, stupid! A clearly sub-par episode, that's for sure.

The woman is crazy... or is she? (She's not)

Warning: Spoilers
Carrie Day (Juli Meredith) hires Intertech and Mannix to do a background check on her fiancée, Mike DiAngelo (Robert Yuro). Joe attends a party at her place to start the investigation. A woman named Gwen (Ann Prentiss), an old girlfriend of DiAngelo, makes an appearance and a drunken scene before leaving. The only reason for her to break in is to give Mannix a lead to check later. That night, Carrie has a dream and shots are fired. Her uncle Rick Day (John Harding) thinks she shot the pistol herself and tells Joe she just got out of an institution. Joe visits said place and talks to Dr Adams (Richard Mulligan). He seems suspicious. After a threat by two henchmen, Joe finds Gwen and Frank Terrano (Herb Voland) together. Joe knows Frank sent the henchmen his way. Back at Carrie's place, we find she has regressed and is sent back to the institution with Dr Adams. Joe is taken off the case but we all know better. Joe goes to the institution and ends up in a fight with hospital people and a strait jacket. The end is bad. Joe is better at fighting in a strait jacket than most people are without one. The bad guy is Terranto who is trying to kill his institutionalized wife with a build up of digitalis and Carrie saw him give his wife a dose. The nurse (Pat Priest) is in on it. Carrie and Dr Adams kissing at the end tells me that Mike DiAngelo is out of there. That's a good thing.

The cast are all veterans and perform well. Frank Yuro is usually a slime ball but in this outing, he is an innocent slime ball. I personally would have run away with Ann Prentiss.

This episode isn't horrible but it isn't very good either. It seems to be a standard plot device in many TV shows that people recently released from an institution has someone around trying to drive them crazy and we know they aren't. Having Lew Wickersham meet Mannix at the gym while Lew is boxing was a mistake. It is clear Joseph Campanella doesn't do that. Intertech people get knocked out a lot.
