I would NOT go below 8 stars on this one, and I'll tell you why. Author Laurence Heath was a prolific tv writer, very popular, long with MISSION IMPOSSIBLE, later DYNASTY. This was the only episode he wrote for the show as he was everywhere.
True, it's familiar stuff, but worth a look... A wealthy woman (well played by Judi Meredith) is slowly being driven insane. Or is she nuts? Joe is assigned to the case by Wickersham, which also entails him investigating her fiance. Or is he nuts?
Everybody has a little problem here that can be EASILY cured with millions of bucks at stake, ya think? There's the sweet catch. Meredith does a solid job (as Carrie), add some MISSION IMPOSSIBLE type drugged out scenes she's in. Judi originally began her career as an accomplished ice skater, before breaking her back and knee. Never to give up, she turned to acting in the 1950s, appearing in many tv shows and movies, including the Barbara Stanwyck cult shocker THE NIGHT WALKER (1964). Watch for it.
Richard Mulligan, a terrific actor and comedian in his own right, plays the "concerned" psychiatrist. Watch Joe and him go at it. CLASSIC MANNIX. Veteran Herb Voland (as Terraro) is the most familiar face, long on BEWITCHED and as a general in several episodes of MASH. He reminded me of Harold J. Stone to a degree.
Look for MUNSTERS co-star Pat Priest as a secretary. The cast is excellent, including many supporting players. Good direction. Some of the elaborate sets and outside settings here will be used again in future episodes.
Always a late night treat, SEASON 1 EPISODE 8 remastered CBS dvd box set.
