Joe Mannix: [sees Vic Stanley walk out of a bedroom in Ellen's broken-in apartment] Hold it!
Ellen Gray: Vic!
Vic Stanley: Ellen, who is this guy?
Ellen Gray: It's all right, Vic. Mr. Mannix is a private investigator.
Vic Stanley: What's he investigating?
Joe Mannix: Among other things, how you got into this house.
Vic Stanley: The door was open when I got here.
Joe Mannix: When was that?
Vic Stanley: Just a few minutes ago. When Ellen didn't answer, I got worried and came in to see if she was all right. Look, I could use a drink. Anyone joining me?
Ellen Gray: Mr. Mannix?
Joe Mannix: No thanks.
Ellen Gray: Vic's the best friend I have. A very good friend.
Joe Mannix: Then you won't mind answering a few questions.
Vic Stanley: About what?
Joe Mannix: Mart Gray. How well did you know him?
Vic Stanley: About as well as any man alive, I guess. Mart and I flew together in Vietnam. We both got out of the Air Force about the same time. Mart went to Hong Kong. I came home.
Joe Mannix: Why did he choose Hong Kong?
Vic Stanley: He had some business offers, I believe.
Joe Mannix: What kind of offers?
Vic Stanley: He never talked about them.
Ellen Gray: Mr. Stanley came to Hong Kong and took care of all the arrangements for me. The police reports, immigration, everything. I'd have been lost without him.
Joe Mannix: Did you know that Mart was in trouble?
Vic Stanley: Not until Ellen told me. It really shook me up, too. I mean, Mart was always a patsy for the easy buck, but... well, I never thought he'd pull anything crooked.
Joe Mannix: What makes you think it was crooked.
Vic Stanley: Oh, come on, Mannix, what else could it be?
Joe Mannix: Did you mention that to the Hong Kong police?
Vic Stanley: Well... no, I never got around to it, but I...
Joe Mannix: Your friend committed suicide, his wife is followed and probably in danger, and you never got around to mentioning it?
Vic Stanley: Now, look, Mannix. You're really jumping...
Ellen Gray: Look!
[sees a man who was stalking her in Hong Kong, who flees. Mannix and Stanley chase after him]
The show begins in Hong Kong (or at least Hollywood's version along with some stock footage). A woman is out shopping when she notices she's being followed. She returns to see her husband and he's behaving weirdly--so weirdly that he tells her to go home to the US, as he's a 'dead man'! Soon, he rushes from the room and very soon you hear a shotgun blast--and he's dead!
When the widow returns to America, she is shocked to see the same Asian man at the funeral who was following her in Hong Kong. Not surprisingly, she goes to Mannix for help. Soon, murders and attempted murders start piling up--and there's no end in sight unless Mannix untangles this mess. However, and I liked this, the main suspect turns out to be a dead end. So who is behind all this and why?
The show is exciting and well written--making it well worth your time. I usually guess the twist and didn't in this one--and I like that. Well worth seeing as well as a surprisingly chance to see Gloria Grahame in a supporting role late in the episode.
NOTE: Although I really liked this one, I must admit that the stunt doubles in the finale were awful and if you are paying attention, you'll see these are NOT the actors playing the parts doing most of the fighting!
