- Lt. Art Malcolm: [Joe and Art are meeting in the middle of a bridge; Joe is going to pretend to kill Art] They bought it, huh?
- Joe Mannix: So far.
- Lt. Art Malcolm: I hope you haven't forgotten how to miss.
- Joe Mannix: I hope you haven't forgotten how to swim.
- [shoots the gun off angle and Art jumps into the water]
- Joe Mannix: Well, I'm not sure I said good morning. Good morning.
- Lorna Wilder: Coffee?
- Joe Mannix: Black.
- [looks around Lorna's patio and backyard]
- Joe Mannix: Oh. Well, well. This is very nice.
- Lorna Wilder: He'll be glad to hear that.
- Joe Mannix: Who?
- Lorna Wilder: The man who pays the rent
- Joe Mannix: Who's he?
- Lorna Wilder: You'll meet him. You're still not the type.
- Joe Mannix: Well, let me tell you something. I can take it or leave it alone.
- Lorna Wilder: That's not what it says in the paper.
- [Joe looks at the newspaper with the headline, "POLICE LIEUTENANT MURDERED.", showing Art Malcolm's picture]
- Frank Marr: [reading the newspaper about Art Malcolm's murder] You did very well last night, Mannix.
- Joe Mannix: Did I?
- Frank Marr: Mm. I have a simpler job for you today.
- Joe Mannix: I'm not using a gun again.
- Frank Marr: No, no, no guns.
- Joe Mannix: What's the job?
- Frank Marr: Well, you're going to meet a man and arrange a purchase for me.
- Joe Mannix: Why me?
- Frank Marr: Well, there are several reasons. First: you cannot be connected with me in any way. Two: you are now not only a fugitive, but a murderer. And three: I have your gun, which even an amateur ballistics man could match with the bullet that killed Lieutenant Malcolm. So you see, you are the perfect go-between.
- Joe Mannix: Hm. Who do I meet?
- Frank Marr: His name is, um... Mr. Green.
- [shows Joe a slip of paper]
- Frank Marr: That's the address. And you'll, uh...
- [pulls out a pair of car keys]
- Frank Marr: ... use the blue sedan out in front. You will tell Mr. Green... the offer is three million.
- Joe Mannix: Three million? That sounds like pure H. There's no way that much stuff could be brought in these days. Not after that bust. There's just too much security.
- Frank Marr: [chuckles] You know, you're right. It's not being brought in, it's already here. Now you can leave.
- Joe Mannix: What do I get out of all this?
- Frank Marr: [slides Joe the address card] What you need... wherever you need it.
