- TriviaThe set used as the entryway for the home of Martin Kimbrough (Harry Townes) is the same used as that used as the entryway of Dr. Wallenberg's home in Fly, Little One (1970), (where Dana threatens to "fly away" from the second story landing near the beginning).
- Quotes
Martin Kimbrough: Mr. Mannix, Martin Kimbrough.
Joe Mannix: How do you do?
Martin Kimbrough: You said you wanted to talk to me about Tully's death?
Joe Mannix: Yes, but, uh, before we do, I'm a private detective like Wes Tully. We were friends.
Martin Kimbrough: What is it you want to say about Mr. Tully's death?
Joe Mannix: He was murdered.
Martin Kimbrough: It was ruled an accidental drowning.
Joe Mannix: Well, it was made to look that way. He was murdered.
Martin Kimbrough: How can you be so sure?
Joe Mannix: I was told so. In a way.
Martin Kimbrough: Told by whom?
Joe Mannix: Wes Tully.
Martin Kimbrough: [sighs] Mr. Mannix, you'll forgive me, but... riddles don't amuse me.
Joe Mannix: Wes came to my apartment the morning of the day he died. He was worried.
Martin Kimbrough: Worried about what?
Joe Mannix: [shows Kimbrough a can of undeveloped film] About this. He had it hidden in his home. Cost him his life.
Martin Kimbrough: What is this?
Joe Mannix: Undeveloped negatives of a man Tully thought masterminded the robbery at your bank four months ago- Darrell Andrews. Wes took the pictures, but never got a chance to develop them.
Martin Kimbrough: How did you get this?
Joe Mannix: He told me where he hid it. Just in case.
Martin Kimbrough: Wes Tully's been dead for two days. Why have you waited so long?
Joe Mannix: I was in San Francisco on a case. I left a couple of hours after talking to Wes last Sunday. I just got back this afternoon and heard what had happened.
Martin Kimbrough: Why have you brought this to me?
Joe Mannix: Wes asked me to. After all, you and the bank directors were his employers.
Martin Kimbrough: Yes, of course. I'll call the police.
Joe Mannix: I've already called them, Mr. Kimbrough. Lieutenant Charleston is due back from San Francisco at 9:00 A.M. I'm gonna meet him. And I don't think it would be very healthy for you to have this around the house. You may have callers.
Martin Kimbrough: Callers?
Joe Mannix: Two men have been following me.
[the phone rings]
Martin Kimbrough: Excuse me. Yes? Yes, he is. Just a minute It's for you.
Joe Mannix: Thank you. Hello. Yeah, this is Mannix. Who is this?
[the line disconnects]
Martin Kimbrough: What is it?
Joe Mannix: A warning. I'm not to go to the police.
Martin Kimbrough: Who was that?
Joe Mannix: Darrell Andrews. Maybe we can flush Mr. Andrews out of hiding.
Martin Kimbrough: How?
Joe Mannix: By going to meet Lieutenant Charleston as scheduled.
You have to admit, the beginning of the story has an original slant. . An old colleague of Joe's tells him he believes someone is going to kill him and make it all look like an accident. Everything rings true, and now Joe is in harm's way, particularly because he has evidence connected with the case the other p.i was working on.
The mistake here is that Mannix talked to the wrong person, without giving too much away, who spilled the beans to the killers. It's also a Catch 22, of sorts, because Joe had to talk to someone (and he always does...) in order to piece a case together. This mistake is made in lots of cop shows. The story heats up when Peggy and Toby (Mark Stewart) are kidnapped, for obvious reasons.
This all underlines what I have said before, and said it when I was a kid... Peggy should have carried a gun in her purse. Even if she wasn't a crack shot, she would have surprised the living daylights out of her captors. That would have been a classic.
Bottom line, you have to watch this one through.
Always a solid cast, first and foremost Harry Townes, an unforgettable actor, playing Martin Kimbrough.
He is the right pick for this role. Likewise, Dana Elcar, who turned up quite a bit on cop shows and had some excellent supporting roles.
Our hero, Van Williams (GREEN HORNET) has a guest role, playing an executive. Long before the Green Hornet, Van was a big Warner Brothers/ABC star in SURFSIDE 6, and many other of the studios's famous productions. He gave it all up, though, to wisely invest in business and real estate. Obviously this role was created for him, because he was a shrewd businessman in real life. His best friend and neighbor was noneother than Adam West (BATMAN).
Great trivia question, folks!
Yes, I do agree with the last reviewer, the killers were not a very wise bunch. Written by John Kneubuhl, who later retired from Hollywood and returned to his native home at Pago Pago, American Samoa, where he is held in high esteem. John holds the distinction of creating one of the most famous villains in tv history, Dr. Loveless, in the WILD WILD WEST, also writing cult horror films.
Give it a faithful watch, and root for Peggy and Toby. SEASON 3 EPISODE 22 remastered CBS dvd box set.
